Re: NEZ Update Query
Any chance they could replace all the turf around the black end-zones. The end-zone turf is not really worn out yet like the rest of the field turf.

Re: NEZ Update Query
I don’t understand why the Feild turf is being replaced. I mean it’s nice but $$$$$$. When 2 sports were just cut I dont see the justification. The only thing some friends and I could figure is that the drainage system has to be continued under the portion where the track is being replaced. I remember when they put in the current Feild they dug down like 10-15 feet for gravel and sand. I guess if you’re already digging and tearing up the turf you might as well replace it.

Re: NEZ Update Query
Field turf has a life expectancy of 7-10 years, depending on weather, use, etc. given the extreme conditions Boone can see, coupled with the fact that the field is our primary practice and game field (ie no dedicated areas outside of the stadium for practice except the indoor facility, which “made us soft”), the life span is towards the low end of the scale. This stuff doesn’t last forever.BTK2000 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 6:48 pmI don’t understand why the Feild turf is being replaced. I mean it’s nice but $$$$$$. FYI, the field turf was last replaced in 2011, when the 23-inch field crown was whittled down as well. The endzones were installed in late summer 2016.

Re: NEZ Update Query
I didn’t realize the lifespan was so short. I do agree it’s cheaper than maintaining a d1 level grass feild in Boone. I remember the difference between being on Elon’s grass that was outclassed by some high Schools vs Florida and Va Techs fields. Floridas natural feild looked like someone went out and combed it.BeauFoster wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 6:53 pmField turf has a life expectancy of 7-10 years, depending on weather, use, etc. given the extreme conditions Boone can see, coupled with the fact that the field is our primary practice and game field (ie no dedicated areas outside of the stadium for practice except the indoor facility, which “made us soft”), the life span is towards the low end of the scale. Re: NEZ Update Query
Easier and cheaper to maintain. No crews. No fertilizer. No water. No dealing with dead spots. It’s consistent every single time you play on it. There’s a reason most stadiums have gone to it.

I believe we can thank Mizzou For our new field turf. They essentially paid for it with the buyout of Drinkwitz contract.

Really? I like the bold look and message...and isn't it concrete walls they cover? (I can't remember exactly)

Re: NEZ Update Query
It is concrete (with brick at the stairs). I think it’s fine. Just because every SEC school has hedges, and every ACC wall is blank doesn’t mean we have to follow suit.
We will never have 100% acceptance of any decision. And that’s ok.

I assume a lot of this work was already committed to prior to the covid19 economic crisis. With most of the funds already secured.BTK2000 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 6:48 pmI don’t understand why the Feild turf is being replaced. I mean it’s nice but $$$$$$. I would also imagine some of this work is now substantially cheaper due to the current crisis

Re: NEZ Update Query
Actually, I think hedges placed between the player sidelines and the bleachers would be a nice touch and allow for additional access for leaving the stadium for fans.

Re: NEZ Update Query
I don’t understand. We have artificial turf that requires less maintenance and now someone wants hedges that require constant maintenance?

Re: NEZ Update Query
Fine. Put up a fence that would allow for a smoother flow of traffic trying to get out. If that is what you took from my comment, I clearly missed the mark.

Re: NEZ Update Query
Generally, athletic departments budget a small amount yearly to be saved for turf replacement, as it depreciates, so there isn’t a single, large outlay.boonetown1 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 6:44 amI assume a lot of this work was already committed to prior to the covid19 economic crisis. All of this work that is in progress was already funded, and a fair amount already in progress or had contracts signed that would result in financial penalties for breaking that would still result in sports being cut. We were damned if we did, damned if we didn’t in this case.

Re: NEZ Update Query
How is a hedge or fence going to increase the number of exits from the stadium? There would still be a problem at the exit gates. I realize there is a problem with congestion under the west stands (that is why I moved to the East).
