ESPN+ Most Important Games for Top 25

Unread post by Rick83 » Thu Jul 02, 2020 8:33 pm

Getting some love from this ESPN guy; article link below but here's the scoop on us:

24. Appalachian State Mountaineers
It'd be easy to circle the trip to Wisconsin as the biggest game on App State's schedule, and certainly a win there would make a statement about the Mountaineers' place among New Year's Six contenders. But before they get Wisconsin, they've got to get past Wake Forest in a potential trap game against a school just an hour down the road. App State made waves last season by going 2-0 against the Power 5. If that happens again in 2020, there might be a real chorus gathering to push a potentially undefeated Mountaineers team for a playoff bid. -- Hale

That would be incredible...just to be in the conversation although I know we wouldn't make the selection under the current format...buuuttttt It'd be awesome to just be in the mix...like UCF a few years back.

I like his enthusiasm, but Wake a trap game? I don't think so. American conference schools would be a trap game. ACC anything is going to be a big game in our locker room.

As fun as this is to imagine, it’s just not a possibility.

I don’t care if we go undefeated and both Wisconsin and Wake Forest win they Big10 and ACC respectively. They still would not put us in the top 4.

I’d gladly take an NY6 slot though.

How much does calling Wake a trap game piss Dave Clawson off? Love it.

Respectfully disagree, if WF and W win their respective conferences and we have beat both of them on their home field.and win out, I would think we would get serious consideration. If we go undefeated and WF and W do NOT win their respective conferences, I definitely agree with your take.

It would be exactly like us (UCF) in 2017-18. No realistic shot for the CFP but the NY6 spot and all the buzz about being considered for the playoffs will be well worth it. And of course you'll also earn a fair share of salty P5 nay sayers.

Until the playoffs are expanded there will never be a G5 in the playoffs. The committee feels that top P5 schools would match up better as well as bring in more revenue and viewership than if they put a G5 in the 4 slot facing the number 1 slot. I love App State football as much as others on here, but can you imagine us facing LSU last year? It be like watching the game VT game in 2011.

And the crazy thing is that LSU was lapping P5 teams with top tier talent. Yet not a word about how those teams don't belong. If a G5 loses that way the meltdown begins on how they shouldn't have let them in despite the end result being no different than what they did against P5s.

It will always be that way. We lost to LSU by 8 in the fiesta bowl without Milton and some thinks it means we can't hang. They'll find any and every excuse to discredit why your P5 wins don't mean much until you finally lose one. Then all of a sudden that one was worth all the marbles and proves you didn't belong and can't hang.

Agree. Wake is not a trap game at all. Our guys will be hyped up for it because it is Wake Forest, ACC school, and P5 school. This was a big rival in 90s and both schools hate each other. Wake could be 0-10 and this game played in November and still is not a trap.

The only way we have a shot at the playoffs is if we beat both schools and they finish in the top 15 along with beating SBC teams by an average of about 20 per game. Not to mention there can't be more than 3 P5 teams with less than 2 losses and AAC undefeated team.

You have to remember that ESPN and those picking the teams will always want an undefeated AAC or 1-2 loss P5 team with name value over a team like us. I really hate debating this stuff because the chance is about 1% right now and the earliest it could even become 50/50, at best, is mid November.

Also depends on the number of Power 5 teams that go undefeated. For example, if there are 2-3 undefeated teams and 1 or 2 with a close loss to a top 10 team I don’t see an undefeated App getting a playoff game. Just the way it is.

Exactly. Just not happening. Way too much would have to happen and we all know there is pretty much no chance. If it expands to 6 or 8 then a G5 could get in but would still need to go undefeated and beat 2 top 30 caliber P5 teams or a top 10 P5 to get serious consideration.

We should beat them by 40 or so but I hope we don't overlook anyone. Morgan State has 3-4 players who are getting legit NFL looks from what I hear and I will never forget losing to a 0-10 VMI team. Because of that I just can't make jokes on other teams. Could you imagine only winning by a field goal or losing to them? It would mean extreme embarrassment and kill any hopes we have of a NY6.

Did we beat ETSU like we should have? Probably not, it was truly a “tune up” game that we needed with lots of new stuff to iron out at that point.

I agree with most above, we don't get in even if we go undefeated and Wisconsin and Wake have otherwise great seasons. But, we'll be in the conversation (and not just a casual mention) all season and that alone would be freakin' awesome.
