Schedule Fillers

Hey all. Long time reader, first time poster.

With the B1G moving to conference games only and the ACC more than likely going that route as well, the guys on WFNZ had an interesting topic about schools like APP scheduling other opponents to make up for the loss of Wisconsin/Wake. Now I understand the likelihood of this happening is slim to none but it’s fun to think about. An obvious candidate would be trying to schedule a game against UNCC since they had Tennessee and Duke scheduled. What teams would you like to see DG try and schedule if it were a possibility?

Notre Dame's not in a conference so they're probably looking for opponents...how about a home & home series...get the Fighting Irish in Boone? How awesome would that be!?!??

No. The purpose of conference only is so that you have 13 weeks to play 8 games which allows you to move a game in case of an outbreak for a team or two.

Interesting to think about, but no. As mentioned above the purpose is to allow flexibility. I would not be surprised if SBC doesn’t move to conference only.

That's what I was thinking. If we have a season at all, I would be very surprised if the G5 conferences didn't follow the lead of the P5 and cancel non-conference games. I really hate saying that!

Liberty is flowing with Money and needs a schedule, and Middle Tenn/ECU.

MTSU played so dirty when we played them in N.O. I would love to pound them again.

GO APPS!!

I agree with others in thinking at this point optimistic would be conference only for Sun Belt as well. Pessimistic, we have no CFB this fall and I drink more liquor than usual. Just for shits and giggles, here are the other schools that have games cancelled against Big Ten opponents the same week.

Air Force
Ball State
Bowling Green
Buffalo
Central Michigan
West Virginia
Temple
San Jose State
South Dakota State
Toledo

If the ACC were to follow here are a list of their opponents the week we'd play Wake.

Elon
Gardner Webb
Mississippi State
Auburn
Ohio
Marshall
Samford
VMI
Wagner

Can't see any FBS conference playing OOC games at this point.

But if we did, obviously nearby teams that we can reach by a short bus ride would be ideal... hey, maybe we can schedule Wake Forest!

Agree on the dinking part. The issue with this, particularly the FCS opponents, would require some decent gate money to pay them to come up to play.

Does anybody know how much we're supposed to be paying Morgan State? Just wondering what we'll be saving if we go conference-only.... I know it doesn't come close to making up for the lost money on Wisconsin, but every penny counts right now.

And, somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but we don't stand to lose money if the Wake game is cancelled, since it was scheduled as a home and home (it wasn't a money game in the first place). Right?...

Found this article from 2018 saying we'll pay Morgan State $325,000.

$250k I believe for Morgan St. As for Wake, the contract wasn’t fulfilled so there could be some financial retribution.

Every UNC system chancellor and AD need to be on the phone lobbying the NC House & Governor to make games verse other UNC system schools happen.

Don't give me this ACC/SunBelt/AAC conference bologne. They are public institutions that serve the residents & tax payers of North Carolinia first and foremost.

We have 5 FBS schools that will have holes in their schedules that will need to be filled and unlike many states the UNC system has the ability to fill these holes.

Keep it in house.

It’s not about filling holes. It is about creating holes for flexibility. Say we are scheduled to play Southern on the third Sat in September. Say they have an outbreak the week before. That game can be moved to another date and App can play an Ark St instead.

To much chagrin, I'm afraid there will not be a 2020 season and I don't want to get in the weeds with that.

But to have some fun with this thread, I am going with a pipe dream list like this:

Boise State
West Virginia
Notre Dame
Fresno State
Southern Cal
Texas
Alabama
Army
Navy
Oklahoma
Ole Miss
Baylor
Memphis
Cincinnati
