I know this may sound a bit harsh but what if a school had a huge senior class with lots of guys who barely play? Is the school obligated to paying for everyone who wants to return? I’ve asked this before but I don’t recall a definitive answer- if say, 15 guys return but all graduated must they all enroll in graduate school? And if that’s the case do they have to qualify? What if we have a guy who finishes this Spring one class shy of graduating and wants to return for his 5th year what are his academic requirements? Does he take additional classes for a secondary degree? Can he, in essence graduate in the fall of the added year then leave after playing football?

You get into a slippery slope with that. You aren’t required to oblige the extra year but it’s bad optics if you don’t. Having said that. It takes a big commitment from a guy wanting to take advantage of that extra year. Sure, as adults, we see it as a gift of more free education. But it’s also one more year of morning weight lifting sessions, study halls, practice, class, film sessions. Aside from that, they have to have the grades to get into a grad school. So you are typically going to have guys that are just done with it all.

I think that’s a huge piece of it. How many guys really want to come back for what amounts to a 5th or even 6th year? Even the ones who are really good and play a lot tire of the grind.

We may end up with too many kids coming back and not enough positions to field them.

That will work itself out. Players know who is on the roster etc and know if they may play. If a senior doesnt think he'd start, they'd probably move on

Meech ever announce? All I remember was the announcers of the bowl mentioning he wanted to come back.

Or redistribute it. Needs to lose that gut and improve conditioning.

As 94 said, schools aren’t required to bring anyone back for the extra year. I know at least Wisconsin said they wouldn’t be extending that option for spring sports athletes. (We’ll see if they’re more generous now that football is involved.) And you can also decide on a case-by-case basis. That may sound harsh but it’s the financial reality, especially at a place like App.

I just scrolled down through the roster and in my non-expert opinion we have maybe 4 guys listed as seniors who don’t play much. I think I count 18 who played a good bit. Of those 18 at least 6 are moving on. If that left 12 what is the approximate cost for one year? I can’t recall the answer to the in state v out of state cost for an athletic scholarship- same or different?

The quick and dirty math is about $30k per scholarship.
