I wonder how many players our staff offers in HS that have come in the portal but don't look good enough based on college film?AppStateNews wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 10:09 pmWe offered him out of HS so I am sure there was some interest on our part with the transfer.

Re: Transfer Portal
With the covid bonus year giving a ton of kids a chance to transfer for free I have spoken to quite a few regional high school coaches who are telling players not to sit back and wait for scholarship offers this year but to take what you can when you can because a lot of opportunities are going to be taken by transfers and in-program kids taking that free year the longer you wait. This will mean fewer scholarships will be available for new players.

I dislike this transfer portal. I hate it for a kid that "has given his all" for App and then be benched from a transfer.

Noble take and I hate it too. However, the other option is to sit by and watch other teams possibly upgrade with players they normally wouldn't get while we take a stand. If thats the route we go, we have to be ready for whatever record that brings with it.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 2:34 pmI dislike this transfer portal. How can you assume that anyone in the portal is an upgrade based on the school that they are leaving?AppDub wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 3:24 pmNoble take and I hate it too. Yep - but some on here would forget about his "giving his all for App" the first time he missed a tackle or fumbled or thrown an INT or called for a penalty -spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 2:34 pmI dislike this transfer portal. Re: Transfer Portal
Never known a player at App to be benched just because a transfer came from "big name U". We have a program of "earn your time" and I expect that to apply to every player regardless of how they entered the program. Also discussing a player or players performance does not equate to being dismissive of said players contributions to our program. We have high standards and expectations here, as we should, as long as it stays strictly about the play on the field(which I believe does more often than not) I have no issue with it.

I remember a 4 star DE from LSU and a 4 star WR from Oregon play behind FCS recruited players.

Here we go again 94. Never assumed that they would be an upgrade. Hence the reason I said "possibly upgrade." It’s just a question bro. We haven’t seen many transfers come in here and make an immediate impact.AppDub wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 6:29 pmHere we go again 94. Re: Transfer Portal
I can’t think of a single example of this happening, at least in the FBS era, and I doubt it would be very common at all unless you are including guys who already weren’t starting as “being benched.”spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 2:34 pmI dislike this transfer portal. Either way, I doubt many of us regret bringing Corey Sutton home. Hopefully we’ll be similarly happy with Pinckney and Brice.

Re: Transfer Portal
Agree. This is one of the reasons he is in the position that he needs to evaluate talent. In the history of the program, how active has App St been in the portal? There are examples of Sutton, Pinkney, and Brice. However, how active have we been. Although I would prefer that all of our 2, 3 and unrated kids develop into great players, it is not going to work out that way. We, like any other school, will have holes or just added depth to fill. Similar to these non App kids in the portal looking for a new home. I am a fan of the portal as it may provide added depth for us and allows kids another opportunity to get into new environments they can excel. Do I want App St to go "all in"? No. This would indicate that we are not recruiting well and developing our kids we do recruit. However, we should be strategic about it. Brice is a great example. We really have no experience at the position and needed experience. Hopefully, we see the Clemson QB and not the Dook QB. With that said, we needed an experienced QB whether Brice or some other QB.Apple@chin1 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 8:13 amI trust the dude with the sandpaper. He’ll lead us to greatness. I have faith.

Re: Transfer Portal
One thing that seems to be understated is the success rate of a given recruiting class. A full class of 25 is generally a success if 12-13 are part of a two deep. Young guys develop at different rates. Some just don’t. The portal is a good place to find pieces that fill gaps caused by injuries, grades, lack of talent to compete at the FBS level. Not everyone works out. Trust that the coaches see this and make decisions based on current needs, along with future needs. We have some possible gaps that need to be addressed.

Re: Transfer Portal
I was about to say the same thing here. Sutton did not bench anyone. He just came in and earned a spot. Brice is not benching anyone if he wins the job either. We lost our starter and he is just here to compete for the job. I want the best QB on the field and I don't care if it is Tabscott, Shuler, Gibbs, or Brice.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 12:02 amI can’t think of a single example of this happening, at least in the FBS era, and I doubt it would be very common at all unless you are including guys who already weren’t starting as “being benched.”spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 2:34 pmI dislike this transfer portal. Re: Transfer Portal
Solid player for sure. Not as fast or athletic as the starters but a very good backup and I'll take 4 of him at the backup LB spots any day of the week. We have an exceptional group of LBs though and I would imagine that Roof could start at any other team in the SBC.
