Re: Spring Practice
I always find it amusing how guys get either overly excited or overly critical of Spring ball practice. Do you want the offense to light up the defense (giving off the impression that the defense is not that good)? Or do you want to see the opposite? If anyone is worried about or harping on Spring ball PIC’s I just have one word- RELAX! Good grief let these players and coaches work on stuff. Let our new QB’s have some time to learn plays and to generate a bit of chemistry with backs and receivers.
Side note with the OC deal. We all know that if we don’t beat Elon by 60 someone here will absolutely freak out.

Re: Spring Practice
One thing to keep in mind with these videos from practice. They are cut, (edited) with intentionality. Meaning, that you won’t see formations, plays, etc.

Re: Spring Practice
The eternal spring ball conundrum: Every win for one side is a corresponding loss for the other. As a fan, it feels like a zero-sum game.
That said, we have an experienced team with a lot of proven players, so it's the unproven ones I want to hear good things about. QB, interior OL, corners besides Jolly. And of course, young guys.

Re: Spring Practice
We also have one of the best defensive backfields in all of college football, and they’re all experienced and tweaking (rather than learning a whole new scheme like some of our offense). Defense is always ahead of offense in the spring.

Re: Spring Practice
Saban disagrees. That’s an antiquated way of looking at the game if you wanna reach the highest heights in the game.
I wish our offensive staff would listen to this as well.

Re: Spring Practice
Saban's comments are spot on, but I'm not sure saying "defense wins championships" equates to favoring any particular offensive philosophy. I mean Saban in that clip you just provided mentioned that they led the SEC in scoring defense. And the difference between a shootout and a blowout in the CFP final was that they held Ohio State's also explosive offense to 10 points in the last 48 minutes of the game.
Defense is still essential, it's just that what constitutes a successful defense is a little different than in the power I days.

Re: Spring Practice
Yeah but his last words are literally “we have to outscore them”. Which i don’t think many on the ole Cabin is a style of play they think they wanna see. Look at Ole Miss vs Alabama last year. Not saying it’s not essential, you’re not gonna win without a somewhat competent one, but like he said, with the rules and philosophies it doesn’t matter how good it is, the offense can and will beat it. Hopefully Ponce being back changes it up, but last year surely felt like “run the ball and play defense and the rest will take care of itself”.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 2:27 pmSaban's comments are spot on, but I'm not sure saying "defense wins championships" equates to favoring any particular offensive philosophy. Re: Spring Practice
Changing your offensive philosophy doesn’t change the original statement. It doesn’t matter how you score, you hold your opponents to 19 a game and you are going to win a lot of games. But he has become a more balanced offensive play caller. Since 2016, Bama has run the ball 60%, 65%, 56%, 51%, 53% of the time.

Re: Spring Practice
The 19 has to be in context though, which Saban provided. It’s a touchdown higher than it was just a year or two ago. A significant difference. Quibble with me all you want haha but Saban’s point here was pretty darn clear.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 2:36 pmChanging your offensive philosophy doesn’t change the original statement. Re: Spring Practice
Clark/TP 545 runs 300 pass. 64%
Drink 599 Run 370 pass 62%
Satt/Ponce 2018 540/319 62%
2017 530/356 60%
2016 578/334 63%
Last year wasn’t too far off the norm from our past success.

Re: Spring Practice
I’m not quibbling with you. You draw your own conclusions. I’m not going to tell Saban he is wrong nor am I trying to prove him wrong. He is correct. The game has changed to a fast paced, score at will game on offense. 19 points is less than three possessions. If you can hold a scoring offense to under three touchdowns, you are going to win.Yosef10 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 2:45 pmThe 19 has to be in context though, which Saban provided. We are one of the top five winningest programs over the last five years. We run the ball at close to a 60/40 split. We play bend defense for 80 yards and tighten up inside the 20. It’s how we have done it and I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

Re: Spring Practice
To add to this: Since 2017 we have had a top 30 scoring offense; scoring north of 30 ppg.
Also the best defense in CFB is an efficient ball control offense, keep the other offense off the field and increases the pressure to score on each of their possessions which tends to lead to unforced errors.

Re: Spring Practice
Taking it a step further, offense sells tickets. AE put butts in seats at Kid Brewer. Tickets generate revenue, pays to retain coaches and soon pays to bring in better players. Better player and coaches win more games.
So, offense wins championships.

Re: Spring Practice
Yeah but it’s not all about just the pass/run ratio though. It’s about when you pass and when you run. I had read an article recently from the athletic that I’m gonna post an excerpt of here. Yeah i know it’s tough to complain about our offense too much, but i just think if we took a little different approach at least 1-2 of the 3 losses last year go differently. It’s not SBC titles i care about, I wanna see us in the NY6 conversation each year and going to that game multiple times. I believe there’s another gear we could hit with just a bit of change on offense.
^those 2 images should be flip flopped but you get the point.

Re: Spring Practice
Great stats. I understand what you are saying and I am not arguing against you. I agree with you that success benefits from keeping the defense off balance. You can’t discount the impact of penalties and obviously turnovers have on a drive.
I get your position that you don’t care about SBC championships. You want NY6 talk. A couple of things. We have been in the conversation the last two years or so. You can’t get a NY6 without the SBC title. The only way we are going to get in the conversation for a NY6 berth is to do what we have been doing. Remain consistent with success. Win the conference. Beat the teams that we shouldn’t.
Go to the 40 minute mark of this podcast. They address what it will take for App to get consistent NY6 talk. None of it talks about blowing out the opposition.
