Re: Mark Speir Returns
I think the defensive analytics just improved for App. I'm not even of the opinion that was a weak spot, but I like having Speir back on board.

Re: Mark Speir Returns
What does a senior analyst do? Does he lead the scout team week to week to prepare for the next opponent? Welcome home Coach Speir.

I love this. Mark Speir is a good man, and a good coach. Doesn’t take up an official assistant position, but brings a wealth of experience and passion.

Re: Mark Speir Returns
So this is an indicator of where we stand in pecking order. Former HC of one of our old rivals is now coming on our staff as a Senior Analyst.
No knock on Speirs and I genuinely believe he can add a lot of value to our staff but it speaks to the progress our program has made over the last 10-20 yrs. Hopefully this gives him a soft landing spot to set him up for his next career move. It is good to take care of your own.

Re: Mark Speir Returns
App State borrowing a tool from Saban's tool bag and hires an ex head coach as a non coaching analyst. It has certainly worked out for Bama and all those "analyst" that are now back in coaching after a little time spent with Saban.

Re: Mark Speir Returns
While it is certainly possible, that is not the reason Spier is back on staff.
I do know a coach at a position he coached at App before did interview somewhere after last year but was not hired. So, I am not saying that won't happen. I am just saying that is not the reason Spier is back.

Re: Mark Speir Returns
While it may not be the reason why, its good to have guys like him and Lance Ware on staff and able to step in if the opportunity arises. I also wouldn't be surprised if Trey Money, the defensive QC coach to maybe get a spot when an opening is available

Re: Mark Speir Returns
IDK but, I would guess he still has a house in Boone. Wanted to get out of the Whee. Received ~700k buyout. Looking to do something productive this year, while he considers his options for the future. Still loves App State.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 2:02 pmWhile it is certainly possible, that is not the reason Spier is back on staff.

Re: Mark Speir Returns
Also gives him a chance to get his feet wet at the FBS level, which he has never done previously as a coach. Perhaps an audition of sorts.Appstate88 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 5:19 pmIDK but, I would guess he still has a house in Boone. Wanted to get out of the Whee. Received ~700k buyout. Re: Mark Speir Returns
I think the most of Speir sat beside him on the plane to our first bowl game in New Orleans . I’m just hoping not for a good ol boy system that proved disastrous in Moore’s last years. I’m on board though!

Yeah, I want to like this hire, I really do. I’m not close enough to the program to really know what benefit he will bring, but I just can’t escape the feeling that this is just a bit of nepotism (not exactly the right word, but similar). I hope I’m wrong and he adds significant value.mountaineerman wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:22 pmI think the most of Speir sat beside him on the plane to our first bowl game in New Orleans . Re: Mark Speir Returns
Clark reached out to him. Spier was not actively looking. It never hurts to have a former head coach, recruiting coordinator, and position coach in the house to bounce ideas off of. We run completely different systems now then when he was here -- and what he ran at WCU. Don't think so much into it.

Re: Mark Speir Returns
I think those who compared this to Bama are closest to the truth. He got a nice buyout from WCU and can afford to sit out a year while waiting for the right phone call. While sitting out he can chill in Boone and be an "analyst" that keeps his name next to a title instead of unemployed. I'm sure he will get a decent paycheck. I don't think he will be a disruption to the program. I also don't expect him to be around all that long.

Re: Mark Speir Returns
I hadn’t thought about Appdaze’s point. Good thought. It does give Speir a year to study and learn something new. The man has options and I think we all like his energy.
