Ull was worst loss since....
I couldn't think of a time that I remembered see us play so poorly or get beat so soundly by a peer institution so I poured through our records to find the answer. When looking through past years, the Miami game in Boone was a worse loss but that was to P5 Miami so hardly a peer institutions. We did lose to S. Alabama pretty bad in 2014 and the FCS Liberty loss the next week really hurt but neither was by 4 touchdowns. So I kept going back and back and there are losses here and there but nowhere in the 4 touchdown realm until you get to 2004. It was October 16, 2004 and those damn gumroots from Georgia Southern beat us 54-7. That is the last time App State got beat by 28 points or more. What a run, 17 years without losing by 4 tds is pretty amazing. 2004 was a down year for us and we all know what it lead to, perhaps this loss leads to exceptional things in the future for us as well. So, with history being my guide, you heard it here first.... App State will win the next 3 national titles (sarcastic wishful thinking).

Re: Ull was worst loss since....
I do not think it is sarcastic wishful thinking, but I do think that until we are given an actual shot at making the playoffs we will not be able to win a national title. We have to be in the game to win the game. I do believe that the reason we have not been able to beat a ranked team since Michigan, is because no one wants to be the next "MICHIGAN", this is the first season since we beat Michigan that they have had a real shot at winning a national title or even the Big 10th. Losing to Appalachian does something to you mentally. "App should not beat us, but they do, how is that possible?" Think, how many teams we have beaten in bowl games that have not been the same program afterwards?

I would put the UMass loss up there as well. It just seemed like every little break and bounce went against us.

Re: Ull was worst loss since....
I did the same thing yesterday but I didn't go back to 2004...the games that stuck out to me where I got the same feelings that I got on Tuesday night was in 2017 when we lost to UMASS 32-28 in 2OT and the following week we lost to ULM 52-45.
Remembering those games and comparing 2017 to 2021 I feel they are about the same...high expectations, lots of seniors, close loss to a P5 (Wake Forest), underwhelming victories to less opponents, ugly loss in the middle of the season where we didn't have a healthy team.
I am not of the belief that the loss to Laffy Taffy was due to coaching. We got punched in the mouth early and were limited personnel wise on offense and by the 4th quarter we cut our loses. Honestly this game means nothing if we beat Coastal and I think the players and coaches realized that in the 3rd.
Rambled...sorry

Yeah but that was a close game so I didn't count it. It was demoralizing but just not the absolute butt kicking we got from ULL.

Re: Ull was worst loss since....
Well, the loss to South Alabama (21-47) followed by loss to FCS Liberty (48-58) in 2014 definitely strikes me as worse, especially factoring in the quality of the opponents. Those were already mentioned above. I have to say that the back to back losses in 2017 to UMass and ULM (Kornegaylw mentions them above) was actually worse though than our loss to UL this past Tuesday. Yes, the score wasn't as one sided but we were HEAVY favorites over a poor competitor in both of those games and to me it was actually uglier.
The final score Tuesday was demoralizing, but it was skewed by the two 4th quarter scores when our D was just plain worn down. I agree that we got punched in the mouth, but I do feel our play calling kept us from punching back effectively. There are plenty of fingers to be pointed, but it was jut an ugly game. Those happen. Someone in another thread mentioned the "quicksand" reference (The Replacements) and that's exactly what it was. We got caught in that downward spiral.
Now let's watch the Apps respond. I do not believe the guys on this team are going to accept this loss without fighting back. They still have plenty to play for and I think we get it done. Regardless, it is ALWAYS GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER!!!

2018 and 2019 Ga Southern.
Both instances, ESPECIALLY 2019, directly contributed to us not making the NY6. I don’t think we pass UCF in 2018 but we would have finished the season with an even stronger ranking rolling into 2019.
I’m not saying the position we are in now isn’t strong but my god could you imagine we run the table in 2019 and got another shot at Penn State in the cotton bowl after 2018? Imagine we won it and finished the season undefeated with 3 P5 wins?
Even one NY6 appearance and I don’t even think it would be a debate right now that we would be a lock add for the AAC.
All of those what ifs were destroyed by two winnable games against the stink. One at home.
For me this UL loss pales in comparison.

Agreed on these recent two. We would have been undefeated if we beat Stink I'm 2019. How many teams can say that at FBS level. Not many. Also would have gotten us more in the conversation on Sports TV shows....maybe even better bowl.ah59396 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 2:02 pm2018 and 2019 Ga Southern.

The 2018 loss was bad due to score. Realize Zac got injured. If I remember correctly, their offense threw less than 10 passes...maybe 5 or less. So to score 34 when not passing makes the score worse than what it was mentally.

Any loss to Georgia Southern is worse, no matter the score differential.

Re: Ull was worst loss since....
Hard to argue with that one. We were prohibitive favorites, and looked lost. Very poor performance in a rivalry game when we should have been highly motivated. The loss of Zac was huge, but we still should have won. Same thing Tuesday...we missed Peoples, but should have played much better than we did. Unfortunately, it happens.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 4:22 pmAny loss to Georgia Southern is worse, no matter the score differential.

Worst part of the UMass game was that I was there. Long way to go to see them lose. Oh wait, I was at the ULL game Tuesday. Long way to go but don’t regret going. Would go to every game if possible.

Well apparently you're just bad luck! Please stop traveling to away games! LOLappfanz wrote: ↑Sat Oct 16, 2021 4:31 pmWorst part of the UMass game was that I was there. Joking!!!! I'm truly grateful for (and jealous of) those who are able to travel to these games. Thanks for supporting the Apps!

Couple of FCS playoff losses were brutal- Montana with the Quick dropped TD? Didn’t we lose another one with a missed XP at home? Stink game was bad as well. Tennessee and PSU were awful in that we had both at our fingertips. At least we have the chance to kind of wipe the La loss away by running the table and beating them again in the CCG.

Right, game of the year to this point is Wednesday, I’m expecting a nice bounce back and playing like we all know we are capable and capping it with a win.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 8:43 amCouple of FCS playoff losses were brutal- Montana with the Quick dropped TD?
