Yawn. Already played them and they’ll be in the conference soon.

Give me Orlando vs UCF

Not going to happen. Louisiana is going to go to New Orleans. The only chance that this happens, is if they win the Sun Belt and all of the favorites in the other G5 conferences lose in the CCG. (Cincy, UTSA)

Yeah I saw this and thought "Wow, nobody did their homework"

Marshall doesn't want this, we don't want it and really ESPN shouldn't want this. Bowls are about seeing matchups you wouldn't normally get to see.

No disrespect to them, but they may not know how the selection process works. They could be assuming that the SB Champ gets the NO Bowl, which isn’t true.

hell, most of the ESPN writers don't know how the bowl selection process works.

It certainly appears that way, doesn’t it?

Of course no one can "confirm." Bowl selections haven't been made yet. And that one doesn't make any sense.

And to be clear, I would pick New Orleans over any other Sun Belt bowl 10 times out of 10. But they very obviously changed the tie-ins so NOLA can pick ULL or another nearby team every year. Why would they pass them over - regardless of the conference title game result - this year?

So the way it works is there are two different buckets that bowl games fall into. Those that ESPN controls (call them access bowls) and those that they don’t. From a SB perspective, ESPN doesn’t control the N.O or Camelia bowls.

ESPN gets first pick of available SB teams. The New Orleans Bowl gets the second pick. There is a gentleman’s agreement that the SB can ask ESPN to pass on the school that New Orleans wants. (Louisiana). So does ESPN pick App or Coastal first with other one likely to be the third pick. App has proven to bring in ratings, so where to you slot them?

ESPN's new model does allow for more flexibility within the tie-in system than it previously did. I think if we win the league title (esp. at 11-2), we might warrant arranging a pretty good TV matchup (e.g., UTSA, SMU or UCF). And all those have tie-in bowls that are nearby.

If we lose to ULL, who knows, other than I assume we'd be slightly lower-priority in terms of matching up with a top opponent.

Basically I would guess that a handful of G5 teams will be good enough for ESPN to prioritize arranging matchups, and the rest they'll just try to keep as close to home as possible.

It’s interesting you said that because I’ve been to Mobile, Montgomery and New Orleans and honestly the New Orleans bowl felt like I was watching the game in a movie theater as the super dome is so huge. There was zero atmosphere during that game. New Orleans is the superior town for night life (even though it poured rain the entire time). I know I’m gonna get killed for saying this but I had the most fun in Montgomery. Plus it felt like more app fans were there. Obviously I’m in the minority with this view but I felt the other towns make the bowl game a bigger deal than New Orleans simply because it’s a highlight for them and New Orleans is New Orleans

So 94 - let's assume (and I think you are correct here) NO picks ULL - are you saying that the 2nd pick would go to ESPN and it would not be the Camellia Bowl? -

Rick, don't believe everything you read. Haha. How could bowls be confirmed if CCGs haven't even been played yet?

ESPN gets pick 1, 3, and 4. N.O. Gets pick 2 and Camilla gets pick 5.

So to your question, ESPN will pick first and will likely skip Louisiana so that the N.O. Bowl can pick them. So we can guess that ESPN’s first two picks are App and Coastal. Then it becomes a question of whether or not they want Ga State or will they leave them for the Camilla Bowl.

Thanks - so don't you feel sure that CC will play at home? - would that count as an ESPN pick? - so here goes - ESPN passes on ULL as the number one pick so NO can get them? So if we beat ULL wouldn't we be their #1 pick regardless because they know NO will pick ULL - Pick #1 - "Pass" on ULL and pick APP - Pick #2 NO picks ULL - Pick #3 either ESPN picks GA ST or CCU and the other at Pick#4

I don’t think that the outcome of the CCG makes a difference either way. ULL is going to go to NO regardless of that outcome. Now, if they win the CCG and there are some massive upsets in the other G5 CCGs, they could possibly get into the NY6. They would need help though.

I went to Montgomery and New Orleans both times, and I'd agree with all that. Although sitting in the middle of the App section in New Orleans, the atmosphere still felt festive. The second time I wound up moving up to the upper deck, and yeah, it was pretty sleepy then. From the rain comment, I'm guessing you made that trip in '19; I will say that the App presence both at the game and around town felt more significant the year before. But still, it definitely felt like the bowl was a bigger deal in Montgomery, for obvious reasons.

For me, though, I like using the bowl as an excuse for a mini-vacation. Montgomery was fine for what it was. New Orleans was a 3-4 day trip that was basically a nonstop party.
