Greenville is on the banks of the Tary River which turns into the Pamlico River and flows into the Pamlico Sound. From the Pamlico Sound one can access the Atlantic Ocean through Ocracoke Inlet as well as inland towns on the Neuse River such as New Bern as well as Beaufort. This entire area is known for being a pirate hangout. It's not at all unlikely that pirates would have navigated up the Tar to Greenville. ECU also represents and serves this entire area so the Pirate mascot is certainly on brand no matter the distance from the beaches. Boats of that day were smaller and could go much father upstream than we think about ocean-faring ships of today. Also pirates were egalitarian and looked after each other with pensions and such.
