East Carolina

I was reminiscing fondly earlier today over our sweet win over East Carolina at BofA at the beginnings of our season when I saw the Pyrites had defeated Navy at Annapolis by 3 pts yesterday. Then I saw that Navy was 2-8 (good grief) on the season. Still, I would rather beat EZU once than the GSU Eagles twice. That's just me. It's not hate, it's just what's left of a rivalry covering nearly 7? decades of Mountaineers vs Pirates .

Greenville NC is like an hour inland from the actual beaches but I guess I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt of picking a mascot that’s on brand. I hate generic mascots that don’t actually mean anything. 64 colleges use Eagles as a mascot. Talk about lame.

Greenville is on the banks of the Tary River which turns into the Pamlico River and flows into the Pamlico Sound. From the Pamlico Sound one can access the Atlantic Ocean through Ocracoke Inlet as well as inland towns on the Neuse River such as New Bern as well as Beaufort. This entire area is known for being a pirate hangout. It's not at all unlikely that pirates would have navigated up the Tar to Greenville. ECU also represents and serves this entire area so the Pirate mascot is certainly on brand no matter the distance from the beaches. And I'm sure there are plenty of Bald Eagles feeding on the trash heaps of Statesboro alongside the gnats, but yeah, Eagles is still a lame, generic mascot.

I know. I was being intentionally obtuse to insult them.

Boats of that day were smaller and could go much father upstream than we think about ocean-faring ships of today. Also pirates were egalitarian and looked after each other with pensions and such. I am glad I am not a Pirate in the context of App State and ECU but Pirates are good for them like the Mountaineers are for us.
Eagles blow however.
