Navy Shuler to Transfer Portal - Young QBs Discussion

Unread post by ASUFan4863 » Fri Dec 10, 2021 11:54 am

With news of Navy Shuler entering the transfer portal today, does anyone have any insight on how the other young QBs (Tabscott, Goodman) have looked this year? I wish we could have gotten some playing time for them this year. I was looking at Tabscott's & incoming recruit Ryan Burger's highlights this week and man do they both remind me of a Josh Allen-esque quarterback. Andre Goodman may have the most explosiveness who could give us an offense we haven't seen since the FCS days.

I hope we can develop one of them at least so we don't lose the guys with the most potential to the portal.

This is the unfortunate part of taking a qb every year. At some point 1 or more will leave because of lack of playing time. Wish Navy the best, hope he finds a place where he’s able to see the field.

That said, we should always try to take a qb every season.

My understanding is Tabscott and Shuler are the exact opposite in terms of progression. Shuler could make every throw from the time he got here, but needed the college game to slow down for him a little bit. Zac Thomas was similar to this but shined during game time. For whatever reason, he didn't always perform the best at practice, but come game time, he typically did. Shuler could be the same way but we unfortunately won't know in the Black and Gold.

Tabscott has had the game slow down for him, but still struggles with some throws.

Goodman has been dealing with some health issues all season. If he can get those sorted out, Ponce REALLY likes his athleticism and he brings a different wrinkle to the playbook.

Ryan Burger is a kid hand picked by Ponce to run his offense. There's a reason Zac Rozsman "decommited." The QB room is filled with young talent and another year with Brice as the leader in there will only help.

The writing had been on the wall with Shuler basically since he got to Boone. Prior to us seeking out Brice, the only QBs on the roster were Shuler and two incoming freshmen, so this isn't really a case of there just not being enough time for everyone. Sometimes you just sign a recruit and then when he gets to campus you realize he's not as good as you thought. I did hear some positive whispers about him this fall, but evidently not enough progress there.

Well of course, anyone who transfers is listed. The fact that NO ONE, not even JUCO lists him is very odd.

A lot of pressure on Shuler , wish him the best but he wasn't going to start over what we have now or incoming.

My guess is that he has decided to be a student athlete instead of an athlete student. Just using football for the free school with little care for play time. Nothing wrong with that.

I wish him the best in school and football. Oh my Lord if he turns out to be a good one for UT some folks on this board will implode.

100% agree with you - could have done that at APP though

Perhaps. But, maybe UT offered him a major that APP didn't. Maybe he wants to get into coaching and feels that "playing" in the SEC is best for him. Perhaps their is an NIL in line for him with the Shuler name. And, maybe he was encouraged to look at the portal. All speculation, but hopefully he made the best decision for his future.

I wondered if he and dad thought it would be better to be a backup who doesn't play in the SEC than in the Sun Belt? He probably picked App thinking he would play for sure. I do wish him the best. Hopefully Shawn will hit better on DC, Andre, and Ryan than Drink did on Shuler. We need one of them to pan out.

I hope the kid goes to Tennessee and lights it up. If he does, that is no reflection on our program. There are a number of reasons why someone transfers..maybe he does not fit our system compared to new school system...or whatever the reason. Hope he does well.

It will be interesting to see if he makes the team.

He tweeted that he wanted to attend the family's legacy school. It seems like he just wanted to go to school at Tennessee.

I don't think there's any doubt he will make the team. He helps to solve a QB controversy they've had there by being a solid backup who doesn't necessarily contend for the starting position. Tennessee had 4 guys all contending this past season and it apparently was an issue resulting in a couple of them transferring. I wish him all the best in all his future endeavors!
