Why? I've never understood the hate for Buzz...I mean had it not been for Buzz we would have never been fortunate to have Capel.

Re: Ponce going to Miami
IMO it wouldn’t be a bad idea to see if Taylor Lamb would return as QB coach/co-coordinator with Watts being the OC/primary playcaller and staying the TE coach.

Re: Ponce going to Miami
Not disagreeing that new blood or ideas is a bad thing, but isn't that what Tony P tried to do? How much does it set us back or how long does it take to adjust to new scheme? New/different ideas may not work great for current personnel. Seems like we are seeing a little of that already.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 12:22 amWatts provided a lot of input to the play calls in the second half of the season with Petersen at the helm. Watts would not be a bad choice. Plus, he wants to be here. He's had plenty of offers to leave but decides to stay every time.
That said, I hope we do a full search to find the next. I also hope we don't handcuff whoever is hired to run our specific offense. Let him put his wrinkles in to it.
When does clark assume that role or at least be play caller and have gameplan by committee (Clark, Watts, Dawsey, maybe saavy/young qb coach) to provide a little stability in that role?

If you move Watts to OC, which I’m not disagreeing with. Who becomes the Recruiting Coordinator?

Re: Ponce going to Miami
Does the recruiting coordinator need to be an on field coach? If not, maybe Lance Ware or Mark Speir? If so, maybe Brian Haines or David Lockwood?

Re: Ponce going to Miami
Based off his Twitter activity he seems very content, excited, and happy to be in Charlottesville at the moment. I doubt he'd wanted to tell his wife that they're moving again before they even got settled. I can't see him as a legitimate option at the moment.

Re: Ponce going to Miami
A great deal of the recruiting process is handled behind the scenes by a few people. It may be more of a supervisory role. I would imagine that it requires a great deal of organization much like an OC. As far as the role of RC, I have no idea if it is required to be held by an on field staff member. Seems ridiculous if it is.97APP wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 9:12 amDoes the recruiting coordinator need to be an on field coach? If not, maybe Lance Ware or Mark Speir? Add to that jumping ship so soon after taking the job. I get that it happens, but do you want to get that reputation so early into your career?/\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 9:14 amBased off his Twitter activity he seems very content, excited, and happy to be in Charlottesville at the moment. With no more knowledge than Clark's comment that this is a sought after job and the recent Lawrence Dawsey hire's resume...I'd bet this moves fast and the base is pleased with the outcome.

Probably true - I’m not necessarily advocating for the above. More or less throwing out an option for keeping it in the family. I’ll pretty much support whoever is hired as those in charge will have much more information than I will./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 9:14 amBased off his Twitter activity he seems very content, excited, and happy to be in Charlottesville at the moment. Definitely not opposed to him returning to Boone one day. It always helps having a former player in the program because they can relate to the players wearing the black and gold.97APP wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 10:44 amProbably true - I’m not necessarily advocating for the above. We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

I know right? I think Buzz and Capel are both worthy of Church writing a song glorifying them both./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 8:45 amWhy? I've never understood the hate for Buzz...I mean had it not been for Buzz we would have never been fortunate to have Capel.

Re: Ponce going to Miami
I could be wrong, but I have a feeling Coach Clark and Doug knew this was coming well before the news broke yesterday. Based on his social media it appeared Frank was in Miami multiple times recently. That coupled with the constant rumor mill connecting him with Miami. On top of that Frank is a good dude, and I’m sure was very open and honest with Shawn and Doug.
I agree this probably moves fairly quickly, we may already have his replacement in mind.

The baby is young enough to not even know what is happening. I am 52 and still don't know what is happening.scatman77 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 11:04 amAdd to that, they just had their first child.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 9:32 amAdd to that jumping ship so soon after taking the job. He was very open about it. However, it did come as somewhat of a surprise. Ponce turned down the initial offer last week. Miami came back with an offer he couldn't refuse this week.appstate24 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 11:21 amI could be wrong, but I have a feeling Coach Clark and Doug knew this was coming well before the news broke yesterday. Re: Ponce going to Miami
Ponce has served App State well during his multiple gigs here. He has seemed loyal and always represented us well. Knowing his roots are in South Florida, his history with Cristobal, the money, etc. no one can blame Ponce, only be proud of him for his achievements and hope him the best. I see him as one of our guys due to his contributions to elevating our program. I want him to achieve whatever his goals are except beating us anytime he/his team plays us.
Thanks Ponce for your contribution to our program. Good Luck!
