Mark Spier was never a head coach at App. He coached defensive ends and linebackers.

The story is that UNC is coming to KBS for the first time ever. Them being coached by a HOFer probably makes it even a littler bigger. But not so much that he spent one year in Boone early in his career.

That's an interesting footnote, but that's all.

This can be as big of a story as the media would like for it to be. Mack Brown left because of money, but some could argue this was the beginning of the current success that Appalachian is enjoying. Had he left for another head coach job, he may have taken his entire staff with him. Had he done that Sparky Woods would not have been here for five years as the head coach and taken the team to the playoffs or won App its first SoCon Football Championship.

My knowledge of the History of App football before the 80s is not very good. Hoping some of the older guys around here would be able to answer that question. Surely Mack isn't the 1st.

Better schedule Loovull before they run Scotty out of town. We had Mark Ennis from ESPN Louisville on our show yesterday and the approval ratings with that fan base are really really low right now. They feel like he puts them in too many 50-50 games, loses too many of those 50-50 games, and then there was the public flirtation with South Carolina.

Of the 24 head coaches in App State history, only 2 coaches had come to Boone with head coaching experience at the college level; Jim Brakefield (Wofford) and Jerry Moore (N. Texas and Texas Tech). Sixteen of the 24 HCs have only been head coaches at App. Beattie Feathers was the first App State HC to leave for another head job (NC State 1943). Jim Duncan would become a head coach in the CFL. The others who left for HC jobs were Mack Brown, Sparky Woods, Scott Satterfield, and Eli Drinkwitz. None of those who left for other HC jobs have brought teams to Boone. Mack will be the first.

Sparky will be with him , a twofer.

Mack Brown, Sparky Woods, and Lonnie Galloway should all be in the house. Galloway was an assistant coach at ASU for a few years AND he played against the Mountaineers as QB at Western Carolina.

Lots of connections there.

Of course, if Louisville were to come to Boone with the current staff there would be TONS of family ties.

I always liked watching Sparky's teams play. I recall how they quite often did not put a punt returner back and added the extra man to the punt rush. I believe App led the nation in blocked punts back then. Another great thing about those teams was getting to watch John Settle run the ball.

ETSU punted on 3rd down a couple of times in one mini-dump game.I also think we had around a dozen sacks.Good times.
