Could it be because he is still playing football?

I would expect as soon as he retires App will retire the number. He was lightning in a bottle!

Who is AE playing for. He was released from Edmonton before the season. Did he get picked up by someone?

14 should absolutely be retired, should have happened years ago. However, the guys who have worn 14, have worn it well. Marcus Cox, Malik Williams, etc. and I believe Kanye is going to be SPECIAL.

Retire it NOW, and let Kanye continue to wear it until his graduation.

GO APPS!!

Since AE graduated, 14 has gone to some superior players. I wonder if it a number that has to be earned by a player, like a legacy number?

Personally, I am not into retiring jerseys. I would rather have the numbers with their name put up somewhere in the stadium. Maybe at the top of NEZ on the brick section. I want kids to be able to wear whatever number they want to wear. Just my opinion.

Personally, I like the idea of retiring the "jersey" but not the number. We should absolutely honor AE by putting his jersey up there with the other greats. I like the idea of issuing that number as a reward to an outstanding offensive back. Marcus Cox and Malik Williams did the number proud and have their own arguments for honors!

I hope that giving this number to Kanye is an indication of the coach's confidence in his ability. If that is true, the future looks bright indeed!

I agree about not retiring a number. It is just too permanent and it's a number. Totally love retiring jerseys, hang in rafters, etc. Let fans see the name and number forever. Rings of honor and the like are awesome.

App already has retired numbers - if there were one to add, it should be #14

The four players whos numbers are retired are players who has legitimate NFL careers. Not that AE did not play in the NFL, he just did not have the NFL career that the players whose number is retired did.

If the post App State career is what has kept them from retiring 14, that's got to be up there with some of the most asinine things done by the athletic department.

Especially considering Settle's number was retired right after he graduated. And I'm not saying he wasn't great but when comparing his numbers to Armanti, yes two different positions and two different eras, but still.

Wasn't the greatest fan of the man, and not suggesting D.G. can't make it right, but if Cobb were still at App, I feel confident 14 would already be retired. I just hope it doesn't come 40 years later like Larry Hand.

I think we should go the exact opposite of not retiring numbers but retire the position. No more QBs. I say we mix things up and really confuse the opponents.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

I think we all know or most of us know we have retired numbers. Personally, I would like to see the university inquire if the folks or family of the folks with retired numbers to see if the "retired jersey" route is an option. For those that say no, fine, no worries. For ones that are fine with it, put them back into circulation. Actually think it may get more conversation. We now talk about, when we see, 14 on the field and the great players that have worn that number. If we continue the route of retiring "numbers", then 14 should be retired...no doubt about it.

If we have a future number 12 that is worthy of number retirement, we would have two of the more popular numbers that a QB wears....for App. SIt would be a great problem to have as we would have seen some great talent wearing No. 12 by that future App. HOF ... personally see no reason to limit numbers that players can wear. Just a personal opinion
