DC Superhero
So, here's a question to kick around this Saturday morning. Many are calling for the firing of Dale Jones as DC. If we brought in an All-Star "DC" today, with the current personnel that we have available:
What do you think they would do differently to improve the defense?

Re: DC Superhero
Not always line up your DBs 10 yards off the line of scrimmage….
Teach players how to tackle and not throw their shoulder at people….
Tell players that 3rd and 12 is actually a more favorable down and distant to defend than 3rd and 1 and that giving those up results in punishments..
Actually make game adjustments
Sit up in the booth where you can actually see the field
Not make political comments on social media and focus on YOUR JOB
Things like that…

Re: DC Superhero
You can bring in Nick Saban and it wouldn’t make much difference. You need talent in order to be successful and right now, we are short on talent.

Re: DC Superhero
With our current personnel (especially how we are struggling at safety), do you think having our corners playing press coverage would make us a better defense? We’ve been getting beat over the top all year.AppStateMtneer wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 8:55 amNot always line up your DBs 10 yards off the line of scrimmage….

One thing I saw the other night watching MACtion, is that the defense would show one look and then shift after the initial read. I’ve also seen entire D-lines shift into a different gap, before the snap. DB’s and LB’s fake dart towards and away from the line to disguise the blitz, D-Lineman dropping into coverage. We line up, allow the offense to assess their blocking and stay stagnant until the ball is snapped.

Re: DC Superhero
If our current secondary guys played up in press coverage several would get holding penalties grabbing fast dudes who juke and blow by them. I'd like to think that very few college football defenses have the talent to play like pros. Most are bend don't break. Those 3rd and 10+ plays we give up are killer. We have to be among the national leaders in that dubious category

Re: DC Superhero
If you're not seeing in game adjustments, you're not watching... The adjustments this year have been pretty good. But here's a weird thing about football.. if one team makes adjustments, the other one is allowed to as well
For instance, against Coastal in the second and third quarters, the only time they gained a lot of yards was on the trick play. We stopped their option game. We stopped their bread and butter. How? By adjusting. 4th quarter, we were exhausted.
All that said, and our defense hasn't been terrible except on third down. Which is crucial. But adjustments are being made. Hell, Jones is now a boundary DB instead of field. That's a MASSIVE adjustment.
Honest question for the people wanting us to play press coverage. If we do that, and get burned because outside of Jones (and even that is questionable) we don't have a press coverage guy, is that ok? Or would you complain about that too?
What if, the reason the DBs are off the ball is because the OLB are supposed to have the curl/flats and they just aren't? Or maybe the ILB is suppose to have the digs and they don't? It's not always (and I would say more often than not to the casual football fan) the player who looks to be at faults fault.

Also, if a change were to happen, I would look extra hard at Greg Gaspo. I don't think a change should or is happening, but Gaspo is the real deal. I wanted him as the DC when Drink was here.

Re: DC Superhero
At least blitz more to try and hide the awful secondary play. The result would likely be the same but occasionally you’ll get a sack at least.

Someone will be a scapegoat for this season and he and the safeties coach are the low hanging fruit.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 11:26 amAlso, if a change were to happen, I would look extra hard at Greg Gaspo. We play a 3-4 and send at least 4 90% of the time.... We are blitzing.... Maybe not a creative blitz, but we are blitzing...

Re: DC Superhero
Some watery tart lying around in ponds is no basis for defensive decisions.
We need batman. Does more with less. At this point, I want a brooding mastermind stalking the sidelines growling at people.

Re: DC Superhero
I would have said Superman, but we would beat everyone 1000+ to 0 and it would get boring.

The people on here who live to criticize other fans would have nothing to do. Their heads would explode.
