4th Down

Can we now all agree going for it on 4th down inside our 40 in a goal line formation is a bad call?
Still can’t believe in that situation that was the call. The Oline pride led to the fall.

I think that was a bad call but I think the Nate run the play before might have been even worse.
Last week we were wise to go with what’s hot and just run the ball, I don’t understand the reluctance to do the same with passing this week when it was working so well. I understand establishing the run, on 3rd/4th in your own territory is not the time

Yes. But it was third and one and a predictable play call that was truly the problem.

And we’ve done it multiple times this year. It has played a major part in us losing AT LEAST couple of conference games.
Combine our 4th and short decisions with our 3rd and long “defense” and I’m losing years off of my life.
Circle the wagons and try to win out.
GO APPS!!

I was ok with going for it. My problem was going up the middle 2 time in a row with 9 in the box. Those were both dumbass play calls.
We will be lucky to win 1 of next 3. Marshall defense is probably better than Coastal. Might beat ODU only because it's at home. Stink will put up 50 on our pass defense.

I agree with you on the play calling...but there were 10 men in the box. I remember b/c I counted pre snap and said "10 men in the box, watch this, their gonna run it right at them again"
The defense is what it is. I actually thought they played better than they have previously.

Play action with a pass to a TE would have probably led to a big gain. Again, we are so predictable everyone knew what we were going to do.

Yes I can agree with that!

I agree that play calling was an issue last night, and it definitely was on the 4th down attempt. I know we want to establish the run, but when they are stacking the box like they did last night and have a KNOWN weakness in pass defense, I don't understand why we can't flip the script. I think we could have thrown for 400 yards on them if we had tried, and it would have opened up the box for running game too.
Several called it early...if OL plays well we win. They didn't and we didn't. We need the OL to find some intensity.
Peoples hardly played. I hope he's not hurt again.

The defense had not allowed any points since early in the 2nd quarter, they just caused Coastal to turn the ball over on downs, and then you give them a short field to defend by going for it on 4th down in the 3rd quarter?
That's simply idiotic. You'd be hard pressed to find any great or even good coach that would say/think going for it on 4th down in the 3rd quarter on your own 40 only down by a touchdown is a great idea.

I've seen it twice in this thread. "Establish the run" is old school bull crap that doesn't matter. Most of the winningest coaches don't worry about "establishing the run" or "balanced play calling." You do what you need to do to win the game. App was absolutely toasting Coastal's swiss cheese pass defense, and then would stall out when they tried to run the ball. It's the opposite of what happened against GA State. App insisted on throwing the ball, and it led to a 14-0 hole to begin the game. The stubbornness of App's play calling drives me crazy.

The real problem is our coach seems to be in denial about who we are right now. We don’t have an offense that can run for that one yard. How many times do we have to get stoned and or lose yardage to understand we can’t do it. If we must go for it on 4th and 1 or 2 from our side of the field, throw the bal!!!

That only works EVERY time we do it

It was a call from a desperate coach in way over his head. Awful

He’s a former olineman and thinks that our current oline can dominate and set the tone. It simply cannot do that against like for like competition. Against Ga St? Yeah, they could. But he’s too stubborn to change. That in and of itself is very concerning. I’ll give leeway to someone who is trying to adapt and change. This staff is not showing that to me.
It’s going to be much harder this morning to convince me to write a large check for facilities/premium seating. I’ll fight off the FOMO and wait until the end of the season to see how things shake out.

To each his own as they have to make their own decision. I will be making my contribution and NEZ dues like clockwork. I may get frustrated with not winning every game. But I ride App. St. win or lose until I cannot afford to do so.

I’m not saying I WON’T do it, but $45k over 5 years isn’t chump change. For that investment in the athletic department, I want to know that tough decisions can be made if necessary. I trust our leadership, but it certainly makes me think.

I guarantee you I wouldn’t make that investment at the current moment. Not paying 5 figures to watch the current product.

I really hate to pile on and last night was tough. I'm a little shocked that it didn't get worse earlier. I think that Coastal could have really let us have it if they opened it up more. That 14 kid was way too fast for our defense and had at least 4 other plays that about went for scores. I used the word stubborn a few times last night to describe our coaching. It's one thing to believe you have some identity and to believe that you can just impose your will but reality is another. When we line up in certain situations and EVERYONE knows exactly what is coming that's a problem. The running back rotation is absolutely baffling. It's one thing to run a guy 10 times then give him a blow but one or two times in a series then a rotation is another. That decision to go for it on 4th was simply stupid.
Jumping offsides on the last big 3rd and 4 was unbelievable. I never understand how a guy can be looking at the ball on the line and jump offsides.

We are coached like an offensive lineman. Hard headed, bland and boring, no personality and acts like they can dominate anyone due to size, but we cant. No one hires ex o lineman for head coaches anymore. They are good on the o line, and that's about it (except our o line isnt working right now).
