Field Goals???

We are 3-5 in Field Goal attempts for the season.
The last FG we attempted was in Week 6 at the end of the First Half against Texas State. Before that, we kicked a 3rd Quarter field goal to take a 24-21 lead against Troy (and Hughes hit a clutch 4th Q eventual game winner against A&M)
We have abandoned FG's since then.
If we attempt and make a 45 yarder to open the 2nd Quarter yesterday and tack on a 30-yarder with 5 minutes left, CB and the offense are simply driving down the field for a game winning attempt yesterday.
Sometimes (especially early), we need to take the points instead of constantly playing with this TD only mentality. (and going outside of the analytics card's recommendations, because analytics are not winning ballgames for us)

No confidence in FG kicker ?

This is a bad trend. Over the course of the season, this shows that we are consistently having to take chances instead of being confident in our offense to create points.

I'm more disappointed that we decided to punt from their 35 yard line (I think twice). Has SC completely abandoned that go for it mentality on the opponent side of the 50?

Hughes seems to have a big leg and seems to get good height and distance on his extra points so I dont really understand this whole analytics thing that causes us to go for it on 4th instead of taking points. Seems like Staton got plenty of opportunities over the past few years and then this year we just shut down the field goal game. I know the kid is young but so was Staton at one time. Give him a chance to put some points on the board.

Having to or choosing to?

This has annoyed the hell out of me all season. We saw Staton miss plenty early in his career and grew into a solid kicker by giving him game time chances. I know we recruited a kicker so maybe that's the plan but when you have a 10% chance to get a 1st down which if you miss you get 0 points vs. a 50/50 shot to get 3 points, I'd take the 3 points in most situations.

Hughes has already made more clutch kicks in 1 season of place kicking than Rubino did in his entire tenure here...

I normally don't condone calling out individuals, but since he's no longer here and finished his playing career at the enemy........

If I recall, one of those situations in 3rd qtr at Marshall 34 with 4th and 15 and we were kind of in no man's land with FG around 50+ yrds, we were down 14 pts. I don't see problem with trying to pin them down deep and we did put them on their 4 yrd line. That was a good call and executed well. Now time for Defense to step up.

I was having a pretty good day...until you mentioned Rubino's name.
Thanks for the bad memories.

When Rubino missed at Tennessee, that is when I knew our fan base was spoiled as hell. He got so many death threats, stayed in his room for weeks without talking to anybody, had to go through therapy (one of the key factors the department hired a full time psychologist), etc.
Shit happens. It's football. Did it suck he missed the kicks? Yes. But nobody hurt worse than he did. And the shit he had to deal with after was unreal. He never could get his mental right after our fan base destroyed him mentally.

Sometimes it gets bad in here, but twitterverse and facebook are shameful.

I had never heard this before. It is really disappointing that people would do things like that. I get plenty upset when we lose, but death threats to a kid that missed a play???? That is insane. Really feel for the guy, hope any issues he had associated with that time are long gone now.

Wow that is absolutely insane. It's a damn game. We have people here who lose their minds over a loss but god I really hope none of them would ever go that far. I can't imagine trying to kick with thousands of people screaming at me. I know these players try to block out the noise but sometimes nerves have to be going nuts. While we were disappointed in the miss rational human beings should use self control.

What I think is funny is that most of the people that are the worst would freakin wilt under that kind of pressure, and then couldn't take the abuse.

While this is incredibly sad, its nothing new.

The way some of y'all treated Rubino is shameful and pathetic. It was his first college game and Satterfield screwed up in that game way worse than Rubino.
He was at the Coastal game supporting App State.
