Re: Thamel on OL Coach
Looks like a good hire on paper. He has also been a recruiting coordinator at many of his previous stops which never hurts.

Re: Thamel on OL Coach
Hopeful he can bring a bull or 2 from Cincy or CMU. 1 hire down, now we await the DC announcement.
Cummings must really love CMU, 5 different stops at CMU in his career, wow.

Re: Thamel on OL Coach
Did Cincy employee the same blocking scheme under Fickell that we use? Do the value the same skill sets?

Barbay has worked with him in the past
. Although you never know how someone will ultimately workout until they do, it helps that another coach on the staff knows the background of the coach and what they bring to table.

Re: Thamel on OL Coach
Cummings was interviewed and incredibly interested in the job last year -- salary was the hold up. Add in his familiarity to Barbay and this is a good hire. Let's hope he can keep the o-line interested this year....

Re: Thamel on OL Coach
If I have time tonight, I'll try to see if I can find some All 22 cut ups to see what Cincy ran. Based on their offense under Fickell in previous years, I would assume it's a zone scheme, but don't know for certain.

Re: Thamel on OL Coach
It's very similar. All out of shotgun, mobile QB, heavy RPO, inside zone blocking scheme (essentially what we want to run with Burger).AppStateNews wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 11:14 amIf I have time tonight, I'll try to see if I can find some All 22 cut ups to see what Cincy ran. Does it really matter though? We wouldn't want a transfer lineman from a program that is 1 year removed from a College Football playoff? That's like Geep saying no to UGA startling left tackle because he's 6'7. Luckily, Cincy runs the same blocking scheme so we're all good there. Bring a BULL to Boone! Don't overthink it

Re: Thamel on OL Coach
Thanks. If the scheme is similar, no need for guys to leave since Satt uses it as well.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 11:14 amIf I have time tonight, I'll try to see if I can find some All 22 cut ups to see what Cincy ran. Re: Thamel on OL Coach
It absolutely matters. Success at one place does not guarantee success at another. Especially for non-starters. It also doesn’t guarantee failure either. But you get guys that you feel like can help you in your scheme. Your hyperbole grossly exaggerates your point.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 11:29 amIt's very similar. Re: Thamel on OL Coach
They don't have any OL in the portal yet. Cummings held multiple recruiting coordinator positions during his 35 year career, this should be fun watching him land some guys moving forward. Definitely helps with him knowing Barbay and coming from very similar systems.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 11:40 amIt absolutely matters. Re: Thamel on OL Coach
This was from 2019 and like I said, I know they used to run a zone scheme under Fickell in the past. However, Cummings was hired just last season and could have changed some things up. I highly doubt it, but possible with a new QB in Cincy that wasn't near the player Ridder was.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 11:29 amIt's very similar. And yes, it does matter tremendously with scheme and position. You played college baseball, right? If you already had 3 first basemen, would you want to bring in another one just because he was available? I don't know anything about strategy in baseball, but I would assume not (also assuming the first basemen can only play 1B). Likewise, in football, if you have a tackle that is used to running inside zone only (like you mentioned) but we want to implement more of an outside zone (which we do -- not sure where you got we want to run inside zone with Burger), you don't bring him in unless you're confident he can pick up the outside zone quickly.
Also, every coach runs the zone a little different. Sure, its the same basic concept, but different positions reach/press differently based on reads.
