I can think of a number of reasons why the game clock should continue to run after incomplete passes. The proposed rule advocating the no clock stoppage after 1st downs (unless within 2 mins of half/end of game) is interesting, even though I doubt coaches will like it because it has the potential to radically change game strategy/tactics.

Any thoughts?

I prefer the clock to stop after incomplete passes and let it run after 1st downs.

I can't help but wonder if some of this is to please ESPN who would probably like for games to fit inside their allotted time slots.

I hope they keep the clock stopping on incomplete passes to go along with what the NFL does.

I agree with Chase, cut the commercial time outs.

Unfortunately, while the games will shorten, the commercial time slots increase.

I think there are ways to update officiating that can help reduce time as well, especially with instant replays. Letting the clock run after 1st down and incomplete passes would shave off a lot of time in the long run, so that's a good start.

I can see many issues related to letting the clock run after an incomplete pass. First down not so much.

How should our offensive scheme change if these rule changes are implemented?

The games already fly by. We get 6 or 7 home games a year, don't take precious minutes from us.

The only brutal aspect to a game, and it's only evident to me when I'm at the game, are the long timeouts and watching clock guy on the field. Commercials pay the bills but when that timeout clock is set to 3:00 it seems like 30. The review process needs to be modified- takes way too long to look at plays.

Letting the clock run after an incomplete pass is just barbaric. Changing the entire game to get 3 more commercial breaks? Teams could throw the ball towards the end of the game, fail, and still force the other team to call a TO to stop the clock? C'mon.

Why do any of you want to shorten the game - the actual game, (not the commercial breaks)?

Then there's this regarding the incomplete pass: if they let the clock run on the incomplete what becomes of spiking the ball to stop the clock. Personally I've never liked the spike; it's intentional grounding no matter how I look at it. There's definitely no eligible receiver in the area nor is anyone outside the tackle box.

On incompletions and first downs, just stop the clock until the ball is placed. To shorten the game, let's cut back on commercial breaks and how long a replay review takes. I'm with a lot of you, I don't really want the game to be shorter.

On the incompletions, feel this should be like a 2 minutes left on half and end of game idea....a team is passing more to score at end of half.... offense is actually rewarded for not completing a pass...so take that away and takes away spiking.

I do not like it for remaining part of game. I want to see more plays..less commercials

So based on these changes how many fewer plays will be in a game?

I think we typically run about 60-80 offensive plays a game

Whatever happens, you know ESPN will engineer it so they don't lose money.

And in a somewhat related take, the biggest reason I'm happy college/pro football are over?
I don't have to see Jake from State Farm and Patrick Mahomes anymore...or Progressive or GEICO, for that matter.

Their ads obviously got thru to you as you are still thinking about those stupid ads and their company names.

Regarding replay reviews: I have a good friend (also an App alum) who officiated ACC, SEC, and independent college football for years and now works games in the booth. I asked him that very question about the time spent on the review and he said that there is a 90 second time limit to determine the outcome of the review. He said that the extra time is spent determining the precise spot of the ball, down/distance, and time that should be on the clock and play clock.
