ACC - Short article/Must read

Unread post by WVAPPeer » Fri Jul 28, 2023 3:05 pm

From dukebasketballreport.com
According to Commissioner Jim Phillips, the ACC is also considering expansion, which is a good idea because Florida State apparently wants out. With media rights signed over to the conference for years to come, that could be tricky but we’ll see.

Unlike the PAC-12, the East Coast is densely packed, but the options are not that great. The conference has apparently looked at West Virginia, SMU, Oregon and Washington according to ESPN.

In retrospect, not taking UConn when UConn wanted in may not have been very wise.

There is a lot of stuff to sort through, but here’s an idea: why not just merge with whatever’s left of the PAC-12 and have an East Coast and West Coast division? You could call it the Coastal Conference and let the divisions keep their current names. The media rights could be impressive too.

If not, it might be time to consider Appalachian State. At least you know the football will be solid.

I’ve always felt App was more a Big 12 type school than an ACC school, but if we’re gonna get the P5 money/network/exposure, I don’t really care between either conference

If the ACC wants to expands, their grant of rights conference contract is null, meaning Clemson and Florida State and others will leave, it won’t happen.

Florida State has wanted out for years. It just hasn't worked out for them.

ACC needs (I believe) eight schools to approve nixing the Grant of Rights. So the eight school need a home before killing the league.

Honestly, a lot of this realignment creating a Big Two and the slow deaths of the Pac-12, Big XII and ACC sucks. Losing Big East Football sucked. Consolidated power sucks.

I just don't get why FSU or Clemson would want to leave the winnable ACC and jump into the meat grinder that is the SEC. What good is all that money if you are going 7-5, 8-4, 6-6 almost every year and you are maybe going to be a playoff team every 10 years or so.

They think that with the enhanced $$$ they can compete for national titles , otherwise their chances continue to diminish, and they want to affiliate with the best.At least that is what my sources tell me.

Our state-kinfolk at Chapel Hill and Raleigh would never give the okay to let us in the ACC, hell Wake would fight it too. Same thing for ECU.

The ACC will imploded once Clemson & FSU leave. State, UNC, VT, UVA, Miami, and probably more. I’d much rather stay in the regionally tight SBC and continue to grow it than go to Boston College and Pittsburgh. If (when) the AAC’s bet on markets blows up in their face, maybe we can convince ECU and UAB/Memphis to hop on board to make it a 16 team league.

I believe if the ACC decides to expand. their grant of rights is null and void and all the teams in the ACC can leave (Florida State, Clemson and others). The ACC is locked in and I do not see expansion happening.

The current ACC schools that call NC home are not fighting App or EasyU entry due to competition....they are fighting it because it adds relatively zero value add for the conference from a TV deal. The ACC already have enough eastern and western NC....

As long as duke, unc, ncsu, and wake are in the ACC we will never be in it, period. Don't waste a single brain cell even thinking about it.

If I'm the ACC I'm talking with UCF, WVU, CINCY, and Kansas. Then I would look to Memphis and USF. Then I would try to raid the big east.

The truth is, if they have to settle for Memphis and usf or lower they are F'ed anyway and it just won't matter. The big two conference are what's actually going to kill college sports, not nil. I hate it. Call them pro leagues already. Detach them from the schools and remove all academic responsibilities. Let's just fast forward and get it over with.

The only ones that may add long term value are Kanas (for basketball) and UCF/USF for Florida markets.
WVU and Cincy add little value from an overall tv market and moving the needle for existing ACC getting additional funds. Adding WVU and Cincy may add to total value , however, you have to add them to getting part of payout...so probably break even or less if you are UNC, Dook, state, wake.
If you take out the money, great for regional rivalries, Cincy is good for The 'ville..tech/yahoos for WVU.
IMO SBC needs to continue to focus on regional rivalries. Get two Fla schools to get some of that market. Add UTSA to get more of Texas. Memphis for TN market, .. not saying these are the exact schools..
Maybe adding some schools gets a TV contract in addition to ESPN+.

In the overall craziness of realignment, I would not rule anything out

It’s not going to help their tv money and that matters

Not true. Nobody can leave until 2036 and if they do then they forfeit all their tv money until that date. It seems like the only way they get out of it is settling in court and paying a certain fee. A few AD’s have said they know the number it will cost to get out but haven’t said that number out loud yet.

We couldn't afford the athletic expenditure to join the AAC....no way can we afford to compete in all athletics in the ACC.

Did they actually offer App a bid?

iirc there were discussions, but the official offer never came for the reason I posted. Uusally the decision to make that move is made before the offer is made, to save either side the possibility of embarrassment.

I understand the offer was made. The Belt responded by making App the "center" of the conference and by adding MU and SM making the Belt, stronger than the AAC.

Exactly this. Until ESPN upped the payouts and added 4 schools, we were trying to figure out how to make the dollars work to move up to AAC.

ESPN had to up the ante to make it the right option for us (and others). They cornered the market with smaller markets but actually have a fan base in the Sun Belt and cornered the market share nonsense with the AAC.

Chancellor Everts played a big role in getting ESPN and Sun Belt to go the direction we did. Many don't like her, but Everts is as good as they come with politicing and getting the right people to agree.

It seems that more of the younger folks do not care for her and some of the Peacock die-hards. It is hard to succeed someone that was popular to the masses with his personality. Cannot tell you if he was good, bad, or indifferent behind the scenes in job responsibilities..He was chancellor for a decent period of time..So, I take it he was good. I was in school when Peacock was Dean of Business School. He seemed to do a good job and popular. And it seems he was a good chancellor. To me, it does not have to be a Peacock versus Everts. Both can be good and also be very different personalities. IMO, she has done much for the university. You cannot please everyone and you definitely cannot instantly react to the student body idea of the day. You have to keep a long-term plan. Is she perfect, no. Nor was Peacock or others before him. No one , including myself, are perfect everyday in every aspect of their jobs. I do not know her...but seems to be doing a good job from what I see.
