Moving On To ODU

Unread post by Black Saturday » Sun Oct 15, 2023 12:42 pm

Tired of the redundant arguments let's move on to a new opponent ODU and give all the other threads a rest until at least next Saturday night.

Not sure we'll be favored based on our recent performances, but we sure need a confidence builder type game.

I imagine we’ll be a 4-5 point favorite even on the road.

ODU is a team that has also played up or down to its opponent. Other than the VT game every game has been decided by a TD or less.

Offense edge to App: total 20 vs 96, 3rd down 33 vs 94, red zone 68 vs 130 (dead last but CCU is 111…)

Defense edge to ODU (ODU listed first in each): total 60 vs 100, 3rd down 45 vs 83, red zone 16 vs 63

Those red zone numbers aren’t reassuring when we have the ball. If we win the turnover battle and can stop the big plays from them we win.

One statistic matters and it's on the score board .

ODU has been sacked 32 times this season, which per game is the worst in FBS. And they don't throw as many passes as some of the other FBS teams up there. And with only a 51% completion rate.

Only non-competitive game was at VaTech in Week One.

Came back from 10-0 down early at Southern Miss, who is 1-5. But blew an early 21-3 lead at Marshall pretty quickly and 17-0/24-7 leads versus Wake. And then you got the 10-9 win over Texas A&M-Commerce.

Their offensive production seems to hinge on whether they can run the ball.

EDIT: Apps open as an 8-point favorite.

If App avoids self inflicted injuries, this is a statement game and will be a step in storing some momentum.

Go Apps! Down with the Monarchy! I mean...the Monarchs!

Lemme guess we go down a score on their first drive, and maybe another early. Fight our way back then win or lose in the last series or two?

We lose this game on a safety as time expires. It's been that kind of year.

Never thought the App fan base would be so easy to break. It's sad how many have given up.

I don't think any of us have given up, however we are all out of eligibility.

I don’t see App Nation giving up. A half a dozen posters don’t speak for us.

34k people on a Tuesday aren’t giving up.

People continue to be passionate about the future of the program aren’t giving up.

The team isn’t giving up.

Clark isn’t giving up.

The news of our death is greatly exaggerated!

Good point. Thank you!
Exactly right about the team. I don't see any "give up" in them. That's why it's frustrating to see folks posting about losses for games we haven't played yet. I'm frustrated about two losses that could/should have been wins, but certainly not writing this team off.

I still have hope but if we lose to ODU then I will only pick us to win the Southern Miss game. ODU is a must win.

By all accounts the locker room is still strong. But they need to win the next two before the brutal November stretch.

The safest thing you can say about this game is that App will be competitive, because App has been competitive in every game this season.

It's also true that most games the other team has had one of their best games in one phases against App. UNC had their best rushing game, ULM had their best passing game, CCU has their best passing game, Wyoming had their best red zone defensive game.

There's an inconsistency with this App team. It's the offense one game, defense another, turnovers one game, kicking field goals on 4th and shorts another, early starts the next, something always happens to give the other team a chance to win. To me, that's on coaching.

I believe in this App team. They've shown an ability to win every game. It just hasn't come together in a dominant way. It still might like it did in 2017. That team was Heart Attack U for the first 7-8 games, then was one of the most dominant App teams I've ever seen in November and December.

I sure hope so! This November stretch might be as brutal as any we have had in past years based on how those teams have done so far.

Everytime on paper we think an upcoming opponent sucks we make them look great. So I’m not getting my hopes up much.

This SHOULD be a win. ODU isn’t impressive at all. Possibly the worst team in the Sun Belt. If App loses, I think it really will be a “sky is falling” situation.
