App had one of the worst run defenses
I'm sure all these graphs are AI generated but man do they help fans really see the picture of their team.

I appreciate the charts. Very cool. However every time I try to read them I wet my pants and forget who I am for about a half hour.

Re: App had one of the worst run defenses
Meaning, our OL sucks. Our backs get hit early, and don’t make it very far. Kind of crazy to see the rest of the sun belt. I would think in our 16-19 run, we were in the top right

Bend but don't break and score more than the other guys. Recipe for 8 or more wins.

Re: App had one of the worst run defenses
The rush defense was much better after the guys got settled with the Star defense. We were giving up 208 YPG thru USM, but that dropped to 140 YPG for the last six games.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

So, we got to the carrier late and couldn’t stop them.
Not directed at you… but, Im not sold on the undersized argument that is constantly thrown around. Some of our best, most dominant, lines were undersized and has numerous walk ons. Imo, it’s more execution than anything; see Troy. We haven’t had that since Ivey left

When you have two nose tackles in a 3-4 defense go down in August, it was always going to be a bit rough up front.

Re: App had one of the worst run defenses
Our defense has been our Achilles heel. We won’t be exceptional until we become dominant on defense. We made huge strides after change but still need improvement to make our team elite.

Re: App had one of the worst run defenses
The reality is that we are still in Triple A college football and we don't generally get the biggest, strongest and fastest dudes available. We have had some "undersized" players who have probably overachieved due to hustle and desire. My take on many of the G5 offensive lines that we have faced who appear to be huge are often just fatter and slower guys. We have had smaller defensive linemen who ran right by them. Generally speaking we aren't typically going to get the whole package- the 6'4" 320 lb nose who is a monster. Like someone pointed out we lost 2 bigger interior guys before the season started and we didn't exactly have more of their size to plug in. We also played the run way better the last 5-6 games. I'll take that second half dramatic improvement all day. If we keep that core next year and grab some complementary pieces in the portal we should be good.

Re: App had one of the worst run defenses
I've been doing some window-shopping in the portal. We need a couple DL like this guy- 330 lbs and athletic enough to playRB.

Re: App had one of the worst run defenses
Agree completely. This is also why I don't get as upset as some folks do about how Troy's lines manhandled App. I guarantee you Troy won't have defensive AND offensive lines as good as they did this year for a LONG time. They hit on everything just right at exactly the right time in a way that rarely happens for most football teams. Can App's lines improve? Of course. But it's a very tall order to get guys with size, speed, and talent all healthy at the same time on both sides of the football like Troy had this year. App has had it before, and will again, but that is the exception, not the rule.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2024 8:22 amThe reality is that we are still in Triple A college football and we don't generally get the biggest, strongest and fastest dudes available. Yep. Some people have to search for negative stuff about our winning App team. If they don't go undefeated, win the conf and play in a NY6 game, the whole staff should be fired.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 7:50 pmBend but don't break and score more than the other guys. Re: App had one of the worst run defenses
Those folks also feel like App football should rush for 200 and throw for 300 every game, average 40 points, allow 10 and 200 yards while averaging 10 sacks by what should be a P5 level defense. Doesn’t everybody want that? Nothing wrong with setting your goals high.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2024 3:17 pmThose folks also feel like App football should rush for 200 and throw for 300 every game, average 40 points, allow 10 and 200 yards while averaging 10 sacks by what should be a P5 level defense. High is good but unreasonable to hold a staff accountable for such high goals year in and year out. Hell, if we did achieve it, the boo hooers would expect it every year or want them ridden out on a rail when they came up short..

Re: App had one of the worst run defenses
Our goal every year should be going undefeated each and every year. Why play if not the goal.
Personal expectations may be different given a particular team depending on talent, depth, experience, etc
If expectations vary greatly from goals for a period of years...., the fans, administration, etc. will not be happy. I am glad we have high goals and expectations for App. St. football. Many programs do not.
Do we have some crazy unrealistic fans, yes. Every fan base does.
