G5 Over the Last 9 Years

Unread post by WASU 93 » Sun Jan 07, 2024 6:35 pm

Update from a post I put together mid season
1. I would say that we have been the Most Consistent Winning G5 program and set the standard over the last 9 seasons. (some schools have had bigger Flash seasons with an NY6 game or rankings)
2. Other than Memphis, our dip was not as drastic as the other other Top 12 programs
3. Four of these programs in the Top 12 are becoming P5 programs and I would venture that others in the Top 12 (plus, a ton of schools not in the Top 12) have larger budgets than App. State
4. It is hard to consistently win 2/3 of the games you play.

For arguments sake:
0-1 win (awful)
2 to 4 wins-- a bad year
5-7 wins-mediocre
8-10 wins-good
11+- excellent

For Perspective:
Number of Wins Per Year Since 2015

App St. 11 10 9 11 13 9 10 6 9- 88 total. (one mediocre, 5 good, 3 excellent). 8 or more wins EIGHT TIMES
Boise State 9 10 11 10 12 5 7 10 8- 82 total (two mediocre, 5 good, 2 excellent). 8 or more wins SEVEN Times
Memphis. 9 8 10 8 12 8 6 7 10- 79 total (two mediocre, 6 good, one excellent) 8 or more wins SEVEN Times
Louisiana 4 7 6 6 7 11 10 13 6 6- 76 total (one bad, 6 mediocre, 1 good, 2 excellent). 8 or more wins THREE Times
SD St. 11 11 10 7 10 4 12 7 4- 75 total (two bad, two mediocre, two good, 3 excellent) 8 or more wins FIVE Times
Toledo. 10 9 11 7 6 4 7 9 11- 74 total. (one bad, three mediocre, three good, two excellent) 8 or more wins FIVE Times
Troy. 4 10 11 10 5 5 5 12, 11 - 73 total. (4 bad, two good, 3 excellent) 8 or more wins FIVE Times
WKU. 12 11 6 3 9 5 9 9 8- 72 total (one bad, two mediocre, 4 good, 2 excellent) 8 or more wins SIX Times
Cincinnati 7 4 4 11 11 9 13 9 3- 71 total (three bad, one mediocre, two good, 3 excellent). 8 or more wins FIVE Times
UCF. 0 6 13 12 10 6 9 9 6- 71 total. (one awful, three mediocre, three good, 2 excellent) 8 or more wins FIVE Times
BYU 9 9 4 7 7 11 10 8 5- 70 total. (one bad, 3 mediocre, four good, 1 excellent) 8 or more wins FIVE Times
Houston 13 9 7 8 4 3 12 8 4- 68 total. (three bad, one mediocre, three good, 2 excellent) 8 or more wins FIVE Times

NOTES:
Only four programs have had 5 10+-Win Seasons in that 9-year span--App/Boise/SD St. (Troy added this year)

Programs with 12 or 13 win seasons (mediocrity happens within three years before or after)
App--won 6 games three years later
Boise-won 5 games the next year
SD State-won 4 games the year before and 7 the year after, then dropped to 4
Louisiana-won 6 games the next two years
Memphis-won 6 games two year later, then 7 the next
Cincy-dropped to 3 wins two years later
UCF-won 6 games the year before their 13/12 years and 6 games two years after
Houston had 4 win and 3 win seasons sandwiched between their 13 and 12 year season (the biggest roller coaster in the Top 10)
WKU-won six games and then three games after their 12 win/11 win seasons and had another 5-win season two years later

Troy had three straight 5-win seasons prior to their 12-win season last year.
Fresno State won 3 games and one game prior to their 10/12 win seasons, then had a 4-win season and a 3-win season

Others:

Marshall 10 3 8 9 8 7 7 9 6- 67 total. (one bad, three mediocre, 5 good). Seven seasons between 7 and 10 wins

MTSU 7 8 7 8 4 3 7 8 4- 56 total. (three bad, 3 mediocre, three good) Seven seasons with 7 or 8 wins
Buffalo 5 2 6 10 8 6 4 7 3-51 total (three bad, 4 mediocre, two good)
Wyoming 2 8 8 6 8 2 7 7 9- 57 total (two bad, 3 mediocre, 4 good) Two terrible seasons and 7 seasons with 6-8 wins
GaSo. 9 5 2 10 7 8 6 4 7 6-64 total. (two bad, 5 mediocre, three good)
SMU. 2 5 7 5 10 7 8 7, 11-62 total (one bad,5 mediocre, 1 good, 1 excellent) but $100M+ in donations = a p5 bid!
ECU. 5 3 3 3 4 3 7 8 2-38 total (6 bad, two mediocre,1 good) 7 seasons of 2-5 wins!
Southern Miss 9 7 8 6 7 3 3 7 3-53 total. (three bad, 4 mediocre, two good) Three three-win seasons and six between 7 & 9

and just because
North Carolina 11 8 3 2 7 8 6 9 8-62 total
South Carolina 3 6 9 7 4 2 7 8 5-51 total
Wake Forest 3 7 8 7 8 3 11 8 4-59 total

With the portal and NIL looking back will be difficult going forward. The landscape has changed dramatically. If you aren’t a high recruit sign to a G5, prove your worth and chase the money. Smart thing to do.

While there are examples of that, I don't think it's become that prevalent. I think more of the movement has been P5 to P5 when it comes to the big NIL deals.

Regardless, we will still be competing among our peer G5 institutions and some will be more successful than others. Over the last 9 years, we're at the top of the G5!

All reports indicate we are well behind our peers in terms of NIL money. That could make it difficult for us to remain near the top of the G5.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

Unless we start losing guys to peer schools, and I am talking about players leaving App, then I don’t see this as a huge problem.

I have to ask again. Since the Portal started what is the percentage (overall) of the number of players who have "upgraded" so to speak? When I say upgrade I mean moving from FCS to G5 or G5 to P5 and after the "upgrade" how many saw increased playing time? Also since NIL how many players have gone from making zero (ONLY on a paid scholarship) to receiving some type of NIL? I'm willing to bet that both are lower than one would expect. For the most part businesses are not dumb and I can't see a reputable business just forking out money to an average college football or basketball player. While we love App football and basketball the reality remains that most of the guys we sign weren't wanted by the big boys. We do get those hidden gems who come to Boone and flourish. If we get a few who are fortunate enough to get a crazy offer they can't refuse and that we can't match god bless them. If we also have a few who are strictly in it for a cash grab and will transfer for what is really pocket change then they were not meant to be here in the first place.

Thanks for updating this information. It really is very telling when you can see the numbers compared to other schools. We are clearly the class of G5 and we seem to have come out of our slump very well and are positioned for continued success in the future. I really wonder how the naysayers view this information, my best guess is they would say that we should have won even more than we have even though we have won more than any other G5 school. As always, It's great to be a Mountaineer.

What's scary is now even if you recruit and build a high success team with underclassmen.....you have to plan the next year just like after a successful year with seniors.

One and done basketball is simpler than football. 5 positions with two deep basketball is a breeze beside of 11 Offense three deep and 11 Defense three deep plus special teams.

Not to mention opt out situations and injury.
KICK ASS!!!

This shows one thing from all of the work WASU did!!!!

IT IS GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. We were darn close to more wins last year. This team is very close to being a monster.

I think we will run all over the SBC next year.
