UNC has bet the ranch on an NFL model going forward.

Perhaps DG also recognizes that a head coach with a lot of NFL experience is of great value in today’s environment.

I think this a big reason for the DL hire. Especially with the revenue share coming in July. I actually love the hire the further we get away from the announcement.

Carolina isn’t our competition. Revenue sharing will begin this coming summer and we will have more to work with than we have in the past.

No, not necessarily, but the key to running a program in the NFL sense, is working with compensation and salary caps (nil in this case).
We seem to have a guy with much NFL experience which I hope that attracts talent. However, he is not working with a significant nil amount to allocate to players. However, maybe the other Group schools have limited funds as well. If our NIL is as good or better than our Group level schools, time will tell if it works out for us.
I thought it was interesting in BB's UNC press conference yesterday, they plan to manage pretty like an NFL franchise. Going to be interesting.

I agree, after having some time to process. It might have been more of a risk to jump on some lower level successful coach due to the ever changing management role of the college head coach gig. I feel like DL's prior experience positions him well to handle the CEO duties after being around the NFL and the SEC (NFL light). Time will tell.

100%. This does not guarantee DL will succeed but his background is exactly what we need. Also, those who love leaks and knowing inside info early might not like this though because NFL people tend to keep their mouths closed more unless there is a real benefit to leaking. A lot of NFL people are wanting to come to colleges now as well because NFL teams don't pay personnel staff like colleges are. We could see a good bit more of NFL people making the switch over the next 24-36 months.

A lot will hinge on the staff he puts together both on the field and in support staff but I am excited to see where we go from here. I would also guess that we will see departures even after the coaching staff is announced. I fully expect to see most of those listed below the coaches, some who have 10+ years, to be gone as well: https://appstatesports.com/sports/footb ... er-coaches

Keep in mind that Georgia, Alabama, and a couple others had started this all as early as 2010 or so. In reality Gillin is reacting more to what is happening and realizing we will be left behind if we don't. I also think that DL sold him on this. Clark never tried to go more the NFL route and I think any coach who does not do it and do it well will get left behind even more.

We are the equivalent of a Tampa Ray or Oakland A’s franchise trying to win games with a smaller salary budget. Those teams hope to get either more bang for their buck or to find stud players on the first contract who are good and cheap. Ride that out until the next contract comes along and let them go. Question is how do you keep a talented sophomore who sat his freshman season and now wants to be paid?

I thought it was interesting in BB's UNC press conference yesterday, they plan to manage pretty like an NFL franchise. Going to be interesting.
We will be working with significantly more funds this summer when we’re able to allocate ~20% of athletics revenue to paying athletes. Will be interesting to see how our department handles that.

“More funds?” Maybe allocated to players, but at what cost? What is going to get less or be cut? Operations will be working with less. I believe 22% of our revenues is ~$3M.

Yep, that will be interesting to see how that plays. With that said, we need a sugar daddy to give us $10 million a year for NIL.😂

Actually, if you want to be proactive and aim to compete with UNC, Clemson, etc we would need one to give about 20-25M

Ideally I would like for about 1,000 people to give enough for that so if one person dies we aren't in big trouble. If you have just one sugar daddy and they die then the gravy train stops.

Agreed, but we can start with sugar daddy and hope App. St. is in the Will😂 .
As we ride that gravy train, we find the other 1,000.

He won big with Brady but had a losing record without him. There is no guarantee. We saw Saban struggle in NFL but win in college. Bill has proven he can win in NFL but he has not proven he can win in college yet. DL has just as many CFB wins as a head coach in college as Bill does so far. It will be interesting to see how both of them do.

So far, I have won just as many games at App as has Bellichek at UNC-CH.
