The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
I forgot who used to do this thread but I always enjoyed it. Not trying to take someone's job but seems it has been a bit since we did this one. With that being said:
The Good (and there is a lot of it)
Head Coach- Dowell Loggains gets his first win as a college coach in his first game and the team looked significantly better than in recent memory.
QB- Swann looks the part with a big game going 31/46 for 368 with 3 TDS and no interceptions.
RB- Dubinion goes for 111 on 22 carries. So happy to finally have a featured back after all that rotation crap.
WR- Barnes will be special for us this year.
DEFENSE- thank you, thank you, thank you DJ Smith for bringing back an App State DEFENSE that we can all be proud of.
K- Big time game from our Freshman, nails his first ever FG of 47 yards and followed with another and 4 extra points. Dude was money and there seemed to be no nerves in his first ever game.
The Bad (not much at all)
I am going to give this to Barnes for that boneheaded move on what should have been the first TD.
The Ugly
Still too many penalties 9 for 98 yards and 2 targeting penalties. Have to clean this up.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
The penalties don't concern me much right now. Everyone battles that game one, and some of the calls last night were very questionable. Let's see how it looks week 3 and beyond.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
I don't disagree but I had to have something for the ugly and that's all I can think of.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
I would have gone with the bad being kick returns and the ugly being the fumble before scoring. Just picking nits

The Good: Tackling! The only bad tackle attempt I can remember is on their TD pass.

It is game 1, but what we saw are the results of a coaching staff that knows what they are doing. Big turn around from what we've had.
I had no idea of what to expect, but all of the coaching experience that we were told about matters.
It's early but our coach may not be around long in the single A league.

If what Coach DLo said is true, they did many more reps in training camp, repetition helps if done correctly.

We beat one of the worst teams in the country, but looked good doing it. Will hold off on "analysis" until after the game with that juggernaut Lindenwood.

Do we really know that UNCC is “one of the worst teams in the country” ?

They might not be terrible. A defense that tackles well makes things look easy.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Either we have exceptional o and d lines, or UNCC has terrible lines. The game was won in the trenches, and the niners couldn’t cut it on either side.
I’m guessing we’re above average and they were/are below. Not sure they’re the worst, but they’re certainly in the lower third
Give 'em hell!

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
When we had those really good couple of seasons that included some ranking I felt like we were legit top 40 that in my mind had App State firmly in the upper 3rd (if you basically broke the D1’s into three quadrants). Some believe that we dropped into the lower 3rd last year. We should get back to at the very least in that 50-60 range which again would have us around the middle of the second tier. Of course it would be great to jump back to that top 40 or so. Charlotte, clearly closer to 100 or lower.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
What is wrong with having good offensive and defensive lines for a change?
Both APP and Charlotte Community College programs got enemas after last season, APPs much needed. DLo has surrounded himself with a lot of experience and there is much good to talk about compared to the way we have trended he last few years.
Their head coach was successful at Ohio and brought in as many transfers as we did. I'll give Charlotte credit. I don't think they are as bad as we made them look. We just aren't used to watching the results of good defensive coaching.

I’ve seen Arkansas folks say they have a few boosters already in Loggains corner.Black Saturday wrote: ↑Sun Aug 31, 2025 7:28 amIt is game 1, but what we saw are the results of a coaching staff that knows what they are doing. Big turn around from what we've had.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
I don't have really anything in the "bad" or "ugly" categories....offense was sluggish at first, but they picked it up. Targeting calls...I couldn't see one of them...refs love calling targeting, so whatever. Of course, get IN the endzone before celebrating; teachable moment
I have tons of GOOD
- team looked VERY disciplined and organized. Maybe I'm forgetting a few, but seems are penalties were effort or over aggression penalties (holding, etc)....I don't remember any illegal formations, false starts, illegal motions, too many men on the field or in the huddle, illegal substitutions, delay of game, etc...none of the preventable self inflicted poor discipline penalties that have plagued us the past years. We looked calm, organized, sharp. Sign of a well coached team.
- the DEFENSE...good scheme, aggressive, excellent tackling and wrapping up. Their only TD was bogus IMO b/c of the 2 calls on that drive.
- Coaches made adjustments.......in game too, didn't have to wait for halftime...1st couple of series were struggles, and they adjusted some things, mixed up the play calling, had receivers running different routes setting QB up for success...LOVED the in game adjustments. Shows me a lot about this staff
- we went out and took care of business and didn't play up or down to the level of our opponent.
- Play calling
- Swann settled in after the first few series and found his groove
- the team played with passion, with fire, with emotion
- excitement is back in the fan base
There's maybe a few more. I'm still feeling the post game glow. IDK if Charlotte is any good, but I saw enough signs to make me think we could be at the start of trending in the right direction.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
I figured as much that's why I am rooting for Arkansas to have a great year so their coach doesn't get fired. We should all be huge Razorback fans.Yosef10 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 31, 2025 12:07 pmI’ve seen Arkansas folks say they have a few boosters already in Loggains corner.Black Saturday wrote: ↑Sun Aug 31, 2025 7:28 amIt is game 1, but what we saw are the results of a coaching staff that knows what they are doing.
