Fanfest scrimmage

Just got back from FF. Staying with in-laws after dropping off daughter to dorm this weekend so I have internet and a few minutes to update what I saw.
Weather=rain
Offensively, it seemed we had a hard time moving ball early. Magloire was getting first team reps at running back - big body and powerful. However, first group had a hard time moving the ball against the D initially. Either Woody has this group totally dialed in or our offense has a ways to go, I have to believe its a little of both. No Fergerson tonight, I don't remember reading he was gonna be out.
2nd offensive unit under Kam Bryant looked really good, or at least Bryant does for sure. He looks very comfortable in the pocket. Eric Davidson and Marcus cox got a lot of reps at running back and Davidson looks really good.
Lots of receivers got touches as expected. Sumler was targeted a few times, but nothing much from him. Beathard and McElfresh looked good. Don't know what the deal with jersey numbers is but Price was wearing #10 and Marcus Cox was wearing #14.
Defense is stout, front 3 are strong. Deuce was everywhere. Frazier and Dada had a couple hard pops on some guys. Not much remarkable from the second.
Kevin Sexton got the 3rd position reps at QB with Hallock and Lamb next.
Punting and Kicking was hard to judge because it wasn't with full down linemen, but the two punters seemed to have good range - even with the rain.

Price changed to #10 and has been for the entire camp.

They must be getting ready to retire that #14 in the near future.

I went as well. The only worry I have is the o-line. I can't figure if our d-line as just that good or the o-line is not that good. d-line seemed to be in the backfield a lot and JJ had next to no time to find an open receiver

It did seem to take the offense a while to get anything rolling. Once they started clicking, both JLJ and KB has some nice throws. Price caught a nice catch in the end zone over a DB who had him pretty well defended (love that height advantage). Bobo picked up a catch just above the carpet, which I thought was a very impressive reception.
There were a few nice running plays but I've always had trouble evaluating those when the QB is wearing the red jersey. Even though we are trying to de-emphasize the QB designed runs, the red jersey makes a dual threat QB MUCH easier to defend.
Despite terrible weather, we had a great day in Boone and I can't wait to see these young men square off with the Griz!

That one pass Kam had deep to Beathard (I believe) in double coverage where he totally threaded the needle was nice.

Couple of questions for those in attendance:
How did JLJ's and KB's knees look? Did they favor the injury at all? How was their footwork? Did the offense roll the pocket where you could see any effects on their legs?
Did the defense tackle well? Did Woody bring a lot of pressure?
How were the special teams coverage?

Agreed, Very nice. That was a great pass by KB to get it in there thru pretty good coverage. Bobo pulled that one in from about ankle level it looked like. Great catch. It happend very fast. We all wanted to see a replay on the big screen on that one.

The offense NEVER looks good until week one. It's like that every year.

That's a relief that Kam looked so good. It's nice to have a quality backup this year and especially for our transition into FBS next year. I would play the backups a lot this season in blowout games.

SS1 said in his post scrimmage interview that he didn't have the full group of 1's in against the 1's on D. He said he was rotating some of the younger guys, including a few freshmen, in and that he expected some mistakes against the likes of DR and Blair, which were made, but that it helped them learn. Best time to do that is when the QB can't get killed (my line, not his). He didn't seem too worried so I'm going to hold off my judgement until I see the OL 1's and 2's in our first games.

JJ and Paul didn't stand a chance against that Dline.
I was encouraged by the RB play, all four I saw showed they can be players for us. There were a lot of freshman making plays yesterday, a testament to the last two recruiting classes.
It was good to see Frazier back on defense that kid can hit! Also our secondary actually looking for the ball is going to be a nice change of pace. Our Dline was also very active getting their hands up to deflect passes.
Bryant is much better than I expected.
The biggest weakness is our kicking game, but weather may have added to our woes there.
Defense is ahead right now, but that is typical.

Although I did not make it to fanfest this year, just had to note that elder son is in front row of fans on photo of Fanfest at GoASU.com.
He's the tall one in white with white cap turned backwards on the right side of the front row.
The acorn don't fall far from the tree.
