Somewhat football related question...

Unread post by AppSt8Will » Mon Oct 07, 2013 11:24 am

Ok, from time to time I like to pose this question and see how many early 90s App alumni remember a ridiculous event that happened around this time of year.

I'll set the scene....1992....Game 7 of the NLCS....Braves vs. Pirates. Yes, the Sid Bream play for those who remember that magical comback. My roomates and I were watching, and subsequently celebrating after the big Braves win to send them to the World Series. Well, all but my Pirates fan roomie who retired to his room that night. Anyway, our celebrating carried us out to our apartment parking lot where we heard a loud commotion on campus, so of course we had to check it out. Much to our amazement, upon reaching Stadium Drive, we discovered several hundred students piling out of the dorms and heading up to the stadium.....to do what? Tear the goalposts down!! Yes, I'm serious...I witnessed a tearing down of the goalposts for no other reason than celebrating the Braves heading to the World Series.

Anyone else remember this??

Why we did that I do not know. Must have been the liquid encouragement.

I didn't see them tearing down the goalpost but I remember the night. At the time I was living on king street and I saw the mob that literally took over the roadway as they proceeded downtown doing that stupid tomahawk chop. I think that mob roamed the streets of Boone for a while that night, but I only witnessed as they passed our house. I remember laughing on the deck as these bandwagon fans acted as if they themselves had won the world series. It was a ridiculous display.

I remember it well. My roommate was (probably still is) a lifelong dire hard Braves fan. He watched all the regular season games either in the ATL or on TBS, and every pitch of the post season, including Sid Breams's hobbling limp from third to home. It would have been hard not to get caught up in his entusiasm that night. I followed him and several others from the dorm to the streets, however I turned back from the growing crowd as it entered the stadium, and heard about the goal posts the next morning.
“When you take that field today, you've got to lay that heart on the line, men. From the souls of your feet, with every ounce of blood you've got in your body, lay it on the line until the final whistle blows.”

I was in the nose-bleed section of Atlanta stadium near the right field foul poll that night and when Stan Belinda came in to pitch it was the loudest I have ever heard any stadium. Everyone in the outfield stands were standing on their seats and stomping their feet and you could almost feel the place swaying. It was incredible and ranks with the Michigan game and the 05 National Championship game as my favorite sports moments.
