Pardon me if this is a dumb question, but this kid is not one of the spring enrollees I believe, so how/when do they know what numbers are assigned to the incoming freshmen, if a kid isn't even a student for another few months?

Walton was a pretty early commit if I recall and seems to be one of the higher rated recruits on many of the services this year, yet I've heard or read almost nothing about him compared to some if the others. What are the coaches saying about him?

No, he's not one of the early enrollees. All of the players, once they are signed, have all their transcripts and paperwork in for the fall (and some are even coming in early enough to take classes in the second summer session), and have been accepted by the university were listed on the roster. Numbers were given to everybody. They can be moved around some but most will keep the numbers they have.

As to the second question the staff is thrilled to have him. He did commit early and shut down his recruitment so there wasn't a lot of drama concerning the recruitment end which is why not a lot of stories were written. But the coaches have always said that he was one of the top gets for this class. We'll see when he gets here what he does and what type of plans they have for him. We have 5 other TE's on the current roster. Several walk-ons but also Bailey and Burns, so unless he's needed or sets the world on fire I'm betting he gets a shirt. Bailey is a Sr and I'm pretty sure they want to have Walton for four after. From all the film I've seen he's going to be a player and someone we'll love seeing for years to come.
