FCS

Did anyone notice in the e-mail interview earlier this week where Coach Satterfield said he wanted to schedule an FCS team every year so we could be assured of having 6 home games?

"Finally, we're probably going to play an FCS opponent each year to try to get at least six home games here at The Rock. It's imperative to have home games for our students, our alumni and our fans to be able to come out and experience this great venue for college football."

Yes. I believe most of us already knew that was going to be the case given the commitment to playing six home games.

Is there a particular point you are trying to make? As 89 said, we have all known for quite some time that we would schedule one FCS team annually. Not sure why this would be a surprise to anyone, as 95% of all other FBS teams do the same.

It was just because there was discussion this board a few weeks ago where a member was saying that there was no reason that we should be playing down to FCS any more or hoped that we wouldn't.

Well guys, Cline is right on this one - there were those who favored playing another "money and exposure" game than playing a Campbell or Liberty or ------- (fill in the blank with any FCS team) - Others wanted to insure we had 6 home games even if it meant playing one of the above ---

Cline is conflicted here. On one hand he can relive the good old days with an FCS opponent on the schedule, but on the other, he's concerned that students and professors won't have their parking spaces on six Saturdays when it could be just five if we didn't have to play that blasted Extra game.

Playing Campbell or Liberty isn't an issue.......playing Campbell AND Liberty going forward wont work. 1 FCS game is fine, the SEC and Big10 and ACC have all been doing it for years. Like others have stated, I think everyone knew we would be playing an FCS team at home probably every year.

True --- but some did not want to play ANY - I believe that was what Cline was referring to ---

I must have missed the thread with the people that thought we would never play an FCS again. Most if not all the App fans I know with any knowledge of college football would know we will.

The only thing I recall even remotely close is some stating that they didn't want to see a FCS opponent brought in place of Southern Miss, if they happen to buy out our return game, which would give us two FCS games. Otherwise, I think all but one or two fans, including me, are okay with having one FCS game per year in order to get six home games. I wouldn't be mad if we had six FBS home games here or there. Heck, that could open up the possibility for seven home games with an FCS thrown in.

You are correct...that was the context of the discussion.

you are right hapapp - it was the thread - "Southern Miss Game" and while it was a thread about SoMiss canceling our game next year, it was stated by some that they would rather play a local "payday" (my term) team even if it meant only 5 home games - the majority, including myself, made the point that we HAD TO HAVE 6 home games for a variety of reasons --- So again, I can't read Cline's mind, I think he was making the point that SS stated we would HAVE 6 HOME GAMES every year and would not being giving up that 6th game for another "payday" game ---

I can't speak for everyone else, but I did comment that I would rather play P5 school instead of adding a 2ND FCS school to the schedule. I believe most of our fans realize we will likely play 1 each year. No problem with that as it would be hypocritical of us to say no FCS games after being upset at teams that refused to play us in the past.

I am ok with a 2nd FCS if it is someone like Montana or McNeese.

No-win situation. A win does nothing for us, and we'd be increasing our chances of getting beat (relative to playing weaker FCS teams).

There will be 60+ teams trying to get the lone G5 spot in the playoff. SOS plays a big role in the selection. With 4 home conference games and one money game each year I would prefer home & home deals with 3 other G5 schools. Then we would only have to play a FCS team every 2 years.

those people must be content then with a season like 2005 when we only had 4 home games...
