For those of you parking in the Duncan and Rankin lots this weekend when we celebrate the 50th year of Conrad/Kidd Brewer Stadium, please take a moment to realise where you are and the part it played in ASU football history. For those of you parking between Rivers St. and the Buildings, you are parking where the stands were for where it all got started. Where Rankin and Duncan now stand was once "College Field" that was the site of the birth of Appalachian Normal School Football in 1928 till Appalachian State Teacher's College Football moved to the newly constructed Conrad Stadium at the start of the 1962 season. The field was torn down in 1962 to make way for Rankin Hall and later Duncan Hall but like all good things, the memories remain of those who were there. (Just for information, my mother wasn't born before last game there).
As we look back at the start of the place where we call home, it is good to look back where our forefathers called home.

Man, that is just too cool.
I had no idea there was a field there, and I've been coming to App since the late 1970s.
Great photos too. Thanks for sharing.

I actually got lucky, and on my tour as a senior in HS, the Ambassador showed us where the old field used to be. It was something pretty cool to learn.

College Field had it all: stunning view of Howard's Knob, endzone seats, and NO TRACK.

You did get lucky. The number of times I wanted to slap an App, when one of the Ambassador would call Broome-Kirk Gym the first gym on campus, would look like a App-Catawba game now a days.
(ANS/ASTC/ASU and Catawba were conference foes in the Carolinas Conference/Old North State Conf. from 1930-1971)
