I don't agree. Armanti should have had his jersey put up in some sort of ring of honor if you will but I don't agree about never using the number again--- What if football at Appalachian were to continue for the next 10,000 years? Think we might run out of numbers? Just a thought--- though I know where your intent is and I understand.

Look, if John Settle's #23 is retired, Armanti Edwards MUST have #14 retired.
Period.
The undisputed greatest player in the history of the school, the Wolverine Killer, 2-time FCS MVP and 2-time national champ has to have his number retired... after #14, I'm fine with never doing it again.

No disputing that. I just don't like the idea of eliminating numbers from EVER being used again... Retire the jersey, if you will, not the #.
And, yes, I realize the trend started a while back at Appalachian, not sure but I think Dexter Coakley's #32 and possibly Larry Hand's #74 have also been retired.

Agreed but think of what that says about the reverence to the once in a generation player like Armanti. He was so good we HAD to retire the number.
99 times out of 100 I would lean towards agreeing with you but I think #14 is a different case altogether.

No doubt if numbers are going to be retired Armanti deserves that. He is the best performer/player I have seen since I started following ASU football (1980).

Well Cox cannot play because of injury for the first couple of games at least so Michigan
will not see that number from us again this time.

I believe there has been 3 numbers retired - Armanti should make 4 and that would leave 190 possible numbers for players - I think APP would survive ---

I got to ask, how do you get 190 left? Assuming a jersey is two digits at most and you have zero and double zero as different numbers (are they allowed in football) I see at most 101 unique numbers and minus the four and we are left with 97 unique numbers. If the zero's are out we are down to 95. Still plenty.

My math is terrible But the reason I used that figure is that a given number can be used by 2 players as long as they aren't on the field at the same time ---

As an AE fan so obsessed that I wore a black and gold pom pom in the back of my hat at The Rock for fours years after he graduated, I want to weigh in here.
If we don't retire his number I can see us doing him a very unique honor that we have done for no other player: turn 14 into a legacy number, a number that has to earned every year, to be worn by the best player on the team whether offense, defense, special teams. (Pardon the run on sentence)
Go into every Fall camp telling the players about AE, show his highlights, his Peyton Awards, NC rings etc. and what one of the players has to do to earn the right to wear that number for that year only. It would be a right that has to be earned every year.
I think this would be a wonderful honor for Armanti and allow the school to keep the number in play.
I'll charge $.02 for this idea.

That makes perfect sense actually and I knew you had a reason, but darned if I could think what it was.
