ASU running game on solid ground
Upshaw expected to lighten the load Cox carried in ’13

Marcus Cox carried the load for Appalachian State’s running game last season, but it appears that he will have some help this time around. Cox set a freshman school records with 1,250 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns in 2013. He accounted for 76 percent of his team’s rushing yards.

But the emergence of redshirt freshman Terrence Upshaw is expected to lessen the burden for Cox, who presumably will return at full speed after dealing with a knee ailment in preseason camp. Cox missed the afternoon session of Friday’s practice and didn’t participate in a scrimmage Saturday, but he is listed in Appalachian’s camp update with only a minor injury, and his status is day-to-day.
