Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
Some pleasant surprises on there and some puzzling ones.
Nunn, Barbour, Howard, and Ford starting is a sign of the talent level we've brought in the last couple of years.
We stole Lewis from GSU, looks like he'll make an impact.
Chapman potentially starting over Fiaher is troubling somewhat. Maybe that should be taken as a good sign.

I don't know what to think about the OL anymore, just seems to me no one has separated themselves from the pack, and we are kinda doing it by committee. Hope I'm wrong, but it's probably going to be atleast a few years before we will field a solid FBS unit

Not surprised at Nunn or Ford starting at all. Ford is going to be a stud. A little surprised Howard is starting so early. Figured he would be a 3 year starter, instead of 4 year starter.Saint3333 wrote:Some pleasant surprises on there and some puzzling ones.

Lewis is a very good one and Barbour is very good Surprised Meador is not starting with Barbour. He must not be picking up the offense well.
I said previously I did not think Fisher should start. I'm surprised it's Chapman instead of Tobias Edge-Campbell but I firmly believe Fisher is the 3rd best center we have.
Hearing good things on Sombo. Would expect him to play more as the season goes on.

I'm with you. We need to pick a starter. If it was me I would flat out say Nunn, Chapman, Lamm, Corbin, and Collins but it seems like we can't decide. It either means our OL coach is not quick at making those decisions or the talent gap is very close and we either have a bad starting unit or two pretty good groups.moehler wrote:I don't know what to think about the OL anymore, just seems to me no one has separated themselves from the pack, and we are kinda doing it by committee. Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
There are a lot of positions listed as OR especially on the line. From what I was hearing Gossett was starting at LG, but he is listed as Out for UM. I cant see Acey being able to play well against the UM line that has 2 DT's over 290 starting. Overall not too many surprises. We certainly have a lot of young talent.

Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
It'll be interesting to see who actually are the starters, especially once we get a few games under our belt. They've only been playing against each other. Hard to know what someone is going to do until you go up against someone else. Remember Cox was listed as the #2 OR back with Maglore last year against Montana.
It's also well known that coaches play with the two deep in these first games and even later own when injuries start happening. I've been reading tweets from Michigan fans all day talking about how Hoke plays with his two deep all the time. They are saying that two of the expected OL starters and two DL starters are listed as 2's or 3's. Why do you think they were trying to keep Cox's injury as quite as possible? This isn't the NFL where you're required to report injuries. There's no film on Upshaw except high school. Fergerson and Davidson have limited. We believe Cox will play but if he wasn't going to why announce it. Make Michigan spend time looking at the film of Cox from last year. It's called gamesmanship. We did the same last year in keeping Blair listed for several weeks when we knew he wasn't going to play. Happened with others also. Two deeps are fun to look at but I look at who comes out on the field once the clock starts.

Here's the wolverine depth chart for comparison. Some of our undersized offensive linemen will have their hands full.

Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
We knew this already, but my thought when looking over the 2 deep are A) We're playing the long game and getting our younger, more naturally talented players valuable experience in our last lame duck (post season ineligible) season and B) The FBS recruiting classes really are that much better.
Looking forward to seeing this team develop this year.
The low expectations are almost liberating in a way. Any win aside from Campbell, Liberty, GaSt, and Idaho are big-time, quality, over achieving wins.
Is it Saturday yet?!

I'm prejudiced here but I think everyone will be pleased with Beau Nunn. I watched him grow up and play here and he can get the job done.Saint3333 wrote:Some pleasant surprises on there and some puzzling ones.

We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
- By my count, there are 8 first-year players in the 2-deep, including three starters (not counting redshirt freshmen).
- Had the same thoughts as some others mentioned about the OL. Some surprising names there.
- Walton moved to OLB - would seem to speak well for Howard (and maybe Gray?) Not sure about the fact that he's listed OR with Townes, though.
- Agree with Moose that we should take all this info with a grain of salt. Depth chart will likely look different within a couple weeks, if not this Saturday.

We have been doing this for years, all is well in APPland.
I want to see some grind out football against the boys in blue.

In the video interview Satt and DJ posted yesterday on App State TV SS remarked that on the O-line and D-line there would be a lot of rotations.

Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
Talked to Gossett at fanfest and he said he would be out for a month recovering from a lower body injury. Also asked Tobias EC if he would play this year and he said he would likely redshirt.JTApps1 wrote:There are a lot of positions listed as OR especially on the line. I don't see the need to play TE-C. We have two upperclassmen that can play so why waste a year of eligibility.

Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
Perhaps they're trying to stagger the depth so we can sustain the same level of play through the entire game in Anne Arbor instead of burning out our true starters in the first half.sixtoes9134 wrote:In the video interview Satt and DJ posted yesterday on App State TV SS remarked that on the O-line and D-line there would be a lot of rotations.

Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
Was the comment on the rotation of the linemen made in context of the Michigan game or just to get experience throughout the year?

Re: 2 Deep Roster Released
We all know that we only played 27 players in 2007. Rarely will any team be able to win a game like that doing that. Perfect storms don't come along all that often. I'm sure Scott is hoping not to have to try that again.Gonzo wrote:Perhaps they're trying to stagger the depth so we can sustain the same level of play through the entire game in Anne Arbor instead of burning out our true starters in the first half.sixtoes9134 wrote:In the video interview Satt and DJ posted yesterday on App State TV SS remarked that on the O-line and D-line there would be a lot of rotations.
We've got tons of unknowns but we also have, at least on the surface, more depth than then. Will it help us pull out a win or even keep it close? Against many schools the answer would be yes but in this case there are way too many factors to know. Raw emotion can help and hurt. We won't know until around 3:00 Sat which way it is. I always want the Apps to win but personally I'm just going to watch the game, hope we come out with a decent showing, limit the injuries to bumps and bruises, and get a big check. Anything else is whipped cream and a cherry on top.
