What will we know and when will we know it?
Today doesn't likely tell us a lot about this team. We won't play another team as good as Michigan this season. We SHOULD do to Campbell what was done to us today. Right now, I am thinking we won't really have any kind of read on this team until 9/20 in Hattiesburg.

Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
My take:
Defense:
Defense was not good overall. We played WAY too soft on coverage and sceondary. I noticed that from first series. Announcers made same comments later in game. Our interior run defense (front 3 play stout against run, this is very positive). Somebody was missing the slant right run big time. They killed us on that play. It is possible that they figure this out after watching game film and fix it going forward. Let's see. Verdict is still out on D.
Offense:
Our running game looks very good. We have two very good running backs (Cox and Upshaw). Upshaw looked great. When Cox is back to full strength we will be in great shape. The O-line did well in run situations overall. I don't know why we didn't run it more in first half. I was pleased to see us run in a TD from short yardage.
Our receivers need to learn how to get better separation. Probably will happen as they get more experience.
Kam gets rattled when under pressure. Opponents, since late last year have noticed. UM blitzed a lot knowing this. He still holds the ball too long. He did this last year. Announcer made comment that he cannot hold the ball that long. Even if there is a heavy blitz, it is the QB's job to dump out and burn defense. He frequently did not make crisp passes.
Lamb looked very impressive. Say what you want about who was in the game and how UM was scheming at that point of game, fact is his first series in FBS, in big house, he was given reins at his own 3 yard line and he led team 97 yards for TD. Found ways to keep the drive alive. Not field goal, not stalled out drive, Touchdown. He converted several 3rd downs and a 4th down to keep drive alive. He passed to receivers at or near first down marker where they could get first down instead of short of first down. He looked very comfortable and seemed to always find a way to make something happen. Bottomline, He made the absolute best out of what he was handed and nobody had to make excuses for him not delivering.
I believe we can have a powerful offense with the right coaching moves. I hope the defense can be cleaned up but need to wait and see.

I like our two headed monster in the offensive backfield. I think that you will see defenses press cover our WR's. The good news is that we probably won't face the same type of players on the corners. I was encouraged by the front seven. They will need to make some adjustments to get more pressure on the QB to help our secondary. Did I mention that I like our running backs.

Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
Today wasn't a disappointment nor a surprise. It really met expectations. I didn't think our Oline could give our QB time and thought we get down early to a motivated more talented team. I knew their TE would absolutely kill us. That kid is an All American.
good: Upshaw is a player, he hits the hole like Krich and always falls forward. We are very lucky to have two great backs the next three years. We also have a good backup QB. Our interior run defense will be above average to good this year. We have some freshman that are raw but have potential at WR, LB, and DB.
Bad: I was disappointed in the punt game. BC did not have his best game, partly due to timing, but he wasn't the same. I look for him to improve next game as he can be a pro. Our pass protection was bad. Michigan's Dline is good and scheme was great, but our Oline and RBs must learn to pick up the blitz better.
Ugly: our LBs and DBs angles were very bad. Wiley and staff will be all over our guys this week on film on the missed assignments and poor angles. This gets back to our raw talent that is I experienced. They will get better.
I know some don't like this type of analysis but those are my observations.
I see lots of positives to build on and excited about many of these players once the light goes off.

Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
My biggest concern is at quarterback.
It's not that I think Kam isn't good. It's just that it seems like he's only good. Kind of a "game manager" type.
We need an explosive player at quarterback. If we had that, we'd cover up a lot of possible holes.
I kind of feel the same way about the defense. It's difficult to judge based on this game, but I wonder whether we have playmakers.
We've got two playmakers at running back. I don't think that's enough.

Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
We need a QB that notices when a play breaks down and there is 15-20 yds open in front of him to tuck it and run. The 3rd down play prior to the punt block just before half, Kam i really think could have ran for the 1st down. This is the samw frustration i had last year. Our QBs since AE (perhaps was spoiled) just haven't had that game instinct.clayton wrote:My biggest concern is at quarterback.

Ugly-pass protection, really embarrassing seeing some members of the line manhandled as easy as they were.
Good- running back, and surprisingly run blocking, how can they be so bad in pass protection but decent in run blocking I'll never know.
Incomplete- wide receivers and qb, impossible to form an opinion when your starting qb is running for his life on almost every play

Kam needs to pay faster, make faster decisions. Lamb may be our guy at QB. Funny that we get Bobby Lamb's son as our QB here at App.

Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
Our pursuit angles on defense were poor and at times the tackling was horrible. Our linebackers and DB's were getting burned a lot on cut back runs when the hole was initially blocked. Our young WR's were really having trouble getting separation from very aggressive Michigan DB's.
The Apps played hard and played them fairly even in the second half. There's lots to work on. Lamb played really well as did both RB's. App will be fine and lots of opportunity this season.

Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
It's still hard to believe with no turnovers and similar time of possession this game was a blowout. The difference is most of their drives involved big plays and we made very few. I'm not down on the team though. Missed assignments on D can be fixed and I like what I saw from many of the freshman. The offense should be fine against sun belt teams, but I do think lamb should get a chance in the coming weeks.

IMO the OL did a very nice job today. How many times do we say "RBs are only as good as their OL"?moehler wrote:Ugly-pass protection, really embarrassing seeing some members of the line manhandled as easy as they were.

Ultimately, Kam and our WRs are weak links. Taylor may not have been facing the entire first string D, but you can't tell me he didn't look far more comfortable and fluid at QB than Kam. Marching 96 yards down field for a TD as your first career appearance in a revenge game is nothing to scratch your nose towards.
Kam will start vs. Campbell but I promise you Taylor will get his reps. He did a very good job and we should all be excited about his future.

We won't see a lot of the S&C gains until next year. Sirignano hasn't had enough time to implement his system to the max. But it's noticeably better.mountaineerman wrote:Please correct me if I'm wrong.it seems to me that every team we play looks so much bigger ,more athletic, and more physical.I know it's michigan but I caught some of gsu ncsu they looked huge .I have seen this over last few years.

Yeah, the Campbell game won't help us know what kind of team we have (unless the unthinkable happens), but we will know more about the team that beat us today after they face Notre Dame.

Agreed. Hopefully with a should-be gimme, followed by a bye week to re-evaluate what's working and what isn't, we'll see a much-improved team in Hattiesburg and beyond.appst89 wrote:Today doesn't likely tell us a lot about this team. Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
Think this is a great point. It would be one thing if the team were already in great shape. But two months just isn't enough time to completely turn around s&c results that weren't where they needed to be. Get him that full offseason and I think we'll see noticeable results.T-Dog wrote:We won't see a lot of the S&C gains until next year. Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
Which is partly why I think, combined with the class of most of our top players, that 2015 is going to be a pretty good team. It will have the talent, and will have had this S&C coach for over a year, to win 6-8, maybe 9, games. That's also why I would like to at least see Lamb get more reps and see if he can help us more than Bryant. Bryant is suppose to return next year and I want the QB who has the best arm, makes the best decisions, and is the best overall player to start most of or all of this year to give us the best chance in 2015. I don't want to see us get handled by Clemson like we did by Michigan this weekend.EastHallApp wrote:Think this is a great point. It would be one thing if the team were already in great shape. Re: What will we know and when will we know it?
Mich is better than NCSU
GA Sou looked better than us
We are not as tough as we once were
S&C ........we need it (so do I)
Kam was given no relief by Mich
Taylor seems to have that QB thing
Cox & Upshaw give em a block & they'll run it down your throat
Hard for WR to separate when DB has a hand full of jersey
I think I saw SO Miss was shut out big today
We are not where we need to be. Its a very strange feeling to be "rebuilding" I think we have a future though. We need some experience, some wins and an attitude.
oh and South Car. had 52 hung on them.
