Opening line for the game was SM -4. It went down to -3 but has settled in at -3.5. The money line is $110. This would suggest the game is pretty much a pick'em to the handicappers.

Hopefully soon we start earning some respect, looks like we are going to snap the SoMiss losing streak for them. Cant say that I disagree to much with the wise guys until we get our QB settled in.

I watched a good bit of their game against Alabama, hard to judge, but they do look like they have some big, talented guys.
On a related note, watching the way the Sun Belt performed Saturday, Georgia Southern may be the best team in the conference.

After 3 weeks, It's real, as much as I hate to see it and say it, TheGnats had chances to BEAT, 2 ACC-Power Five programs, we got our doors blown off by a mediocre Michigan team and rolled a non-scholly.

I think that we are. As a general rule the home team is given a three point home field advantage on the line. That makes this game a pick em.

True but they didn't. They lost to teams that a very mediocre Michigan team would probable handle. Neither State or Georgia Tech have beaten anyone that impresses me.

Being an underdog to this bunch is pretty humbling. Hopefully App can un-humble me Saturday night.

People tend to forget, this isn't the score vegas believe will occur, this is the score they believe the general public will place even money on each side.
I'd say it is a very fair line given it's an away game.

That's because they've played nobody, but GaSouthern played better than I or anyone probably thought.
At this popint, I dont think APP would have done that well. We need a QB.

I honestly think that we can match up favorably with Southern Miss. This is not Michigan. This is not Auburn. This is not even East Carolina. We should go into this game and punch them in the mouth early and often and give em a heavy dose of Marcus and Terrance. Quick passes while the oline is getting their sea legs and then stretch the field. I really believe that we should win this game by 10+ points. We shall see.

that's ok, college coaching isn't my profession, I am certainly not always correct.

I agree completely. We are no longer the skate down the field offense of years gone by. We have a strong running game that needs to set up the pass. We have a QB (either one) that can move the chains. Personally, at this point in the process I trust KB more than Lamb to manage the game and keep the chains moving. We are at a disadvantage against anyone except GS from this point forward in our depth. The way to negate that disadvantage is to keep the opposing defense on the field and our defense off.

I would agree on the line. I think the line speaks to how poorly they view SM rather how they view us. We don't generally play G5 teams so it is hard for oddsmakers to figure what we would do. To have an established FBS team with a full complement of players playing a transition team at home at only laying the home field advantage is telling of how bad SM is right now.

FWIW, GS started out as a 4 point favorite on the road against South Alabama. It has since been bet down to 2.5.

Regardless of the outcome Saturday Night, we better pound the rock down their throats. Alcorn State had 2 100 yard rushers, including their QB who ran for 161 yards and a TD. They gave up 295 yards on the ground and an AVG of 9.2 yards per carry. Granted that number was skewed by 3 huge runs of 64, 35, & 35. Even once you take those 3 runs out, Alcorn ran for 160 yards on 28 carries (5.7 YPA). Marcus and Terrance better be fed early and often for us to win.

10-4 to that. Looking back at the Michigan game, they had 3 runs of 51-61 yards each and we were only down 14-0 with 2:45 left in the 2nd. Should have been 21-0 at half, but those final 14pts took the air out of us, IMO. I believe we should win this game. Michigan is a lot better than Southern Miss.

That 9.2 ypa number is incredible. Probably my biggest source of confidence for this game.

East,
Even taking out the 3 biggest runs, Alcorn averaged 5.6 YPC. Another statistical anomaly is that they have scored only two TD's and attempted 10 FGs through 3 games. Southern Miss also runs 2 run plays per every 1 pass play. Their QB is a pocket passer and is not a major run threat.
They kicked 4 field goals vs Alcorn State and scored their only two TD's of the year. Keeping them out of the end zone will be instrumental in the Apps chances to win.

I would like to see us gameplan to our strengths which is running the ball. I am also anxious to see how the our young receiving corps responds to defenders of G5 talent. Their maturation as a group will go a long way to determining our fate.
