Appalachian taking its time in search for AD

"Alan Hauser, Appalachian’s faculty athletics representative who is serving as chair for a 19-member search committee, said the committee is now “zeroing in” on a search firm that will help with all stages of the search."

“In athletics searches, we normally see institutions want to move relatively quickly,” Hauser said. “We feel we have a good acting athletics director in Rick Beasley and we, while not wanting to move slowly, want to take the time necessary to do a good, thorough job to be sure the next athletics director we get is going to be the best person available.”

Third month and they are just now narrowing in zeroing in on a search firm. If they were moving any faster they would be backing up.

wow, you would think they would get a firm hired in the first month, well, I guess it shows they have alot of faith in Beasley.

Or are in effect pushing for Beasley to get the job by their inaction.

That has worked so well for us in the past.

Do you suppose that some of the 19 members on the search committee are some of the same "people that matter" that we have grown to know and love?

The committee is way too large and has way too many people that will report to the new AD on it.

A committee of this nature should have no more than nine members and less than 1/3 should be employees of the position to be hired.

A large committee will mean this will take longer and no consensus will be reached. Typically this leads to a weaker candidate or decision reached in an effort to please a greater portion of the committee, exhibit A - Washington DC.

This is the most visible hire Everetts will make during her tenure, the committee she has selected isn't the route I would have gone.

I have my full faith in Hauser to lead. Getting it right is extremely important. I am not sure what rushing into this mammoth decision will accomplish. Still agree with many others, the committee is way too large.

Agree Saint. Part of the problem with a committee this large is trying to schedule a time when most of them can meet. Will be cumbersome trying to wade through all of this for a final selection. I hope they get it right.

I swear we are the most backward athletic program when it comes to search committees and the hiring process. We even fumbled (no pun intended) the chancellor search and made that the most awkward hire of this year. Does she even know which team is playing on Saturday? I watched her clapping excitingly when Liberty scored and someone had to pull her aside and tell her the OTHER team scored.

We have a 19 member search committee AND we have to hire a search firm? I just hope we get it right.

They have to have a search firm because you can't get 19 persons together at the same time because of time and business constraints.

There has to be some ground between rushing and this. Two months in and we're maybe getting close to having a short list of search firms from which to select one that will begin to find us a group of candidates to consider?

Continental drift just asked us if we could pick up the pace a bit.

My thought as well. Surely you kid, buffalo? No way this happened, right?

Ah yes, I remember search firms. They brought Western Dennis Wagner.

It is routine in high-end hires of all types to hire an outside firm. These firms spend their lives assessing openings, opportunities, and people. I can't tell you how many times my husband got called, seemingly out of the blue, by a national hospital staffing company checking to see if he was interested in this position or that in Oregon or Washington or somewhere else nowhere near Asheville. Each professional search firm has its niche. I have no problem at all with hiring a firm to assist the search committee.

Yes, she knows who we're playing! Dr. Everts is quite sharp and actually seems to enjoy football. Her job, unlike yours and mine, is not paying attention to the game on Saturday. Her Saturday home game job is interacting with boosters, being sure she meets all the right alumni who came to homecoming, being sure she connects well with every student organization on campus for homecoming festivities, and doing it all while there's a football game happening.

I had mentioned Hunter Yurachek a couple of times earlier but he got snapped up by Houston. He was the AD at Coastal Carolina...... Not sure what Houston is paying but he is from Charlotte..........and played basketball at Gilford

I don't think the problem lies in hiring the search firm. I'm happy we are. The problem lies in the time frame it's taken to hire the search firm, and the baseball team-sized roster we've put together to wait two months to decide to hire said search firm.

I appreciate everyone's take on the size of the committee. Perhaps, we should wait and see who they pick before we rush to judgement.

19-member committee still looking for a search firm?
I swear...sometimes it seems like it takes us an hour and a half to watch 60 Minutes.
