Sunday Morning QB ---

Unread post by WVAPPeer » Sun Oct 19, 2014 7:58 am

Yes, this is what everyone needed - players, coaches, family, fans, MMBers - It was a performance that we all have been hoping to see ---
- Yes, I have read the posts, "This was just one game, it doesn't make it a trend" and in reality they are correct but what it does show is the potential this team has moving forward this year and the next couple of seasons to come ---
- Because they are young we could very likely see some ugly games yet this season - that is one quality found with youth - unpredictability --- But I think anyone who watched this game saw great athleticism, tough, hard-nosed play, speed, and a lot of heart in these guys ---
- Before I get to specifics of the game, I do have one comment - I have been underwhelmed by the size of several crowds in the SB I have watched --- I know the comments prior to moving up were similar to - "I'm tired of playing in high school stadiums which are half empty" - Understandable, but it looked like we played in a college stadium that was 3/4 empty yesterday --- KUDOS to the APP fans that were there as you guys made more noise than the entirety of Trojans!!! And we definitely heard the APP --- STATE cheer - Way to go!!!
The Game
1. even on the first drive by Troy our defense looked better, same result but it took a great catch by their WR on a 4th down conversion and of course a couple of stupid penalties on us helped them along - After that the defense was GREAT!!!
2. Heard David Jackson say on the post-game that NOT ONE TACKLE IN THE GAME - NOT ONE - WAS MADE BY A SENIOR !!! --- WOW
3. The RBs ran great, It certainly looked like Marcus was out to prove that last week was not the Cox we love to watch - Upshaw ran hard --- Fergerson looked the best I have ever seen him and Taylor is a very good runner ---
4. Taylor made some good throws but you know it is really nice when you can just run over people and only pass whenever you choose - He looked a little shaky on some throws but we don't know if he and the WR were on the same page ---
5. The OL was GREAT!!! - we are now seeing that depth pay off as there seemed to be a constant rotation on the line --- they really played well --- And how about a big hellyeah to my guy Alex Acey - Al Groh highlighted him several times!!!
6. As stated earlier the defense played great - again the rotation up front paid off - we had to make some adjustments with a couple of LBs out and DJ Ward looked like Kimbrough out there - Law was his solid self and the guys on the outside all played well --- we lost our SR DB early with the targeting call (thought it was a penalty but thought they might overturn the ejection) but Gibbs played great and the rest of the DBs looked good as well ---
7. The coaching decisions of bringing more pressure on defense and using different sets on offense were both right on target ---
8. Special teams - well is there a college football team playing who has given up more KO returns for TDs over the last 15 years than APP? - I guess I will say it continues to be a work in progress - Critcher looked more comfortable with the place kicks ---
9. Also, I have read here that well Troy is a bad team - I would not agree as they hung with Duke into the 4th quarter, they lost a heart-breaker by 2 AT UL-M and had a big win last week - Now, I know they aren't where they were expected to be and have lost some games they should not have lost - BUT, they are proven entity in FBS and SunBelt ranks ---
10. A good time for all of us to take a break - and get ready for the home stretch and all the ups and downs we know are ahead of us !!!
11. Can't sign off without mentioning my other Mountaineers - taking down 4th ranked undefeated Baylor !!!

Glad you typed all of that. I agree with you and feel the same 100%, even with the "other" Mountaineers. RP all the way.

Agreed, great time for a bye week, coming off a victory and plenty of time to prepare for Georgia State. Since it is a bye week and speaking of West Virginia, time for a kayak/float trip in Springfield. Leaves should be peaking and the beer will be cold! Great job yesterday Apps!!!

Troy's attention was bad, it looked like we were at Furman or Wofford, but remember Troy's stadium is also twice their size.

Oline and more aggressive defensive scheme were the difference in the game.

I actually think the bye week couldn't have come at a worse possible time. We finally do something to gain some confidence and now we have to take a week off.

Tommy Bowman's comment ---
"Troy, coming off its first victory a week earlier, reverted to struggles in front of a sparse crowd swallowed in its 30,000-seat stadium."

Maybe, maybe not. One positive is it will provide some added time for the injured to heal.

Could be - guess we will find out - the good thing about the bye is it is coming after a huge emotional win after a round trip bus ride of what 16-18 hours? - they might not have even gotten back into Boone before dawn ---

It was... However, this from underdogdynasty.com: "This game kicked off only a half hour before Alabama took on Texas A&M, which might have been the reason attendance was so low."
I have friends in Alabama... The state all but shuts down when Alabama (and/or Auburn) plays... Just the way it is there. Good write-up though Ned.

Scott seemed optimistic in Tommy Bowman's article. a positive to having the bye week is some guys can get healed up before the final stretch of the season
Defensive end Ronald Blair will be evaluated further after leaving the game in the third quarter with an injury to his right leg. Satterfield said there are signs and hope that the injury isn’t a major one.
“Fortunately, we’re off next week so he has some time,” Satterfield said.
Running back Terrence Upshaw left the game as well, but Satterfield said that he’s fine.

Loved the ground game, thought our kicking game was better (especially after seeing Troy's miserable on sides kick attempt).
For years we have struggled on special teams--yesterday a 99 yard KO return (but take that away and We really KOed them). I won't relive the blocked PATs but you can remember them. Some teams really emphasize special teams, do we not have the depth of personnel/coaches etc to devote to make special teams more effective? Is that a luxury P5 schools can afford? I don't know, just asking.
And, BTW, I Watched the game at Harvey's Bar in Cornelius as I had a meeting in the area. Great App folks there if you're in the Lake Norman area definitely give them a try.

I agree with what you say here, good amount of thought thrown down here. I hope Scott can build a trend, as you all know I have my doubts. This win does build hope and that may be enough to get this thing on track.

i think it will improve as we add more depth and FBS scholarship players. we're still playing some walk-ons from the FCS days there

and +1 on Harvey's. been there a couple of times and it's awesome. i almost went yesterday, but i wanted to be at home to vent in case things went awry in the game

Anybody catch the K-State/Oklahoma game yesterday. OU was the #11 team in the country and had a PAT blocked and missed a 19 yard field goal.

I was at the Alabama/Texas AM game, I believe that the state shuts down when they are at home, the tailgating was the biggest I have ever seen, atleast 120,000 tailgating within a mile of the stadium, and the main area, the quad was like nothing I had seen before. I have been to almost every Acc team, and Florida, and none of them even comes close to how they do it at Alabama, if you guys ever get a chance to go, do it, if for no other reason just to see how they tailgate, got to be the best in the country, cant imagine anyone else does it any better.

LSU was pretty good in 2008. The game was moved up to 10 am so people started pulling in about 10 pm the night before.
