Hey, Marcus, Let’s Re-Think the Vaseline

Inexplicably, Lamb looked uncharacteristically tenuous in passing on the Mountaineers’ early possessions. His delivery looked tenuous, his passes lacked zip. When Blowing Rock News asked Satterfield afterwards if his emerging star, redshirt freshman QB was hurt, the second year head coach chuckled and explained, “Well, in the first part of the game he couldn’t grip the ball because there was Vaseline on it. One of the guys had Vaseline on his arms, so it got on the ball and it was bad. He couldn’t grip it. And you can’t change the ball until halftime. In an opening sprint out to the left, Bobo (Beathard) was wide open, but he overthrew it because he couldn’t grip it…That’s bad,” Satterfield said, smiling. “Whoever put the Vaseline out, we’re going to have to get that in check.”

Lamb confirmed the problem, glancing up and smiling at Cox in the press conference afterwards, “We had a couple of running backs and one put Vaseline on his arms to keep him warm. That’s all fine and dandy, but the first half every time I grabbed the ball it felt like butter on the ball…I couldn’t hold onto the ball…and you can’t change the ball until halftime. So, thank goodness we could change it at halftime.”

Had to have been something. Looked to me in the stands that the DE moved and TL might have thought he had a free play. Then the O did not look like they were too serious about getting the DB. Just looked like they thought it was coming back. It was a terrible throw so it could have been the BIG V!

I've been an AT for 36+ years. I've been to rat-killings, hog slaughters, playoff games, and the Salley Chitlin' Strut.....ain't never heard that vaseline would keep you warm.

Watch the first half replay and you can see TL repeatedly wiping his hands on his towel pre snap. TL also bobbled a snap in the redzone that Marcus recovered.

I've been an AT for 36+ years. I've been to rat-killings, hog slaughters, playoff games, and the Salley Chitlin' Strut.....ain't never heard that vaseline would keep you warm.

Actually, using Vaseline to protect from the cold is an old farming trick. Farmers will sometimes put Vaseline on the combs of the chickens to prevent the combs from getting frostbite. I'm not so sure it works with people though.

It definitely works for football too. I know at Lambeau Field (the Frozen Tundra) the Packers are infamous for putting vaseline on their arms. It helps trap the body heat and keeps them warmer...

Although, that is typically the lineman who aren't touching the ball -- not sure I have heard of RBs doing it. I've heard of receivers putting it on their hands under the gloves, but never a RB putting it on their arms.

I was not able to hear the call and did not know that. We talked about it in my section, it just seemed to be too bad of a throw. I think a young QB learned a good lesson and we were able to overcome!

okay I feel better now too. I could have left my seat at the top of section 215 and intercepted that moon shot. Makes better sense that it was a hail mary type what the hell give it shot throw.

OK, I'll say what a lot of people are thinking. I'm not buying the vaseline-for-warmth line of thinking. Football players for years have used slippery substances to make them, well, slippery. It's no different than wideouts putting sticky stuff on their gloves. Not only is it not legal, but also if it impacts the quarterback's ability to grip the football, then it's a bad idea.

I've heard of people putting it on their faces in extreme cold. It's at least an old wives tale.
