Financing the move

Unread post by appvette » Fri Nov 14, 2014 9:37 pm

I would love the see the gains and loses we have seen so far from moving to FBS. So, let's look at the variables that contribute to revenues and expenses and figure out the net gain / loss from moving to FBS. I know things will continue to change over the years and losses may become profits or profits may become loses. To keep it simple, let's only look at the net differences. For example, only consider the additional expenses from travel rather than trying to look at the before and after totals. Chime in if you can tell us the amount for any of these:

Gains:

Conference Payout
TV Money

Loses:

Travel
Scholarships (not a direct expense)

Tossup:

Yosef $
Gate $ / Concession $

TV money? Do you know for a fact that we are being paid a significant amount for appearing on ESPN-3. There seems to be precious few commercials.

I clearly asked people to plug in $ amounts if they know the facts... meaning I don't know the numbers. Do you know for a fact that we do not have any revenue from TV contracts?

No, I don't. That is why I used a question mark and also used the word "significant" rather than asking for a dollar amount. It would seem to me that we won't know about TV money until after the season is over.

I know you said it's early....but this imo is a wasted discussion when we are not even close to transitioning to the SunBelt and FBS. We don't know anything that is a gain for certain except we are mentioned now as a D-1 school. Bring this up in 5 years.

Much of what ESPN pays for, outside of marquee matchups where advertising can be sold at a premium, is simply content. By that I mean, if ESPN controls it, no other network can. Without content, competing networks can't gain a foothold. ESPN can then charge whatever they want for marquee advertising. If a company wants to reach reach a demographic interested in sports, there's really only one place to go.

Rekdiver is spot on with his post. The data you're asking for isn't available to any of us. In fact, it isn't even available to athletic department staffers in enough finality to analyze. They may have enough data for university auditors to examine in late July/early August--but that's not definite. Expenditures for 2014-15 will be known by then, but final 2014-15 revenue from all sources probably won't be known.

I am sure last years numbers are available, but the Sun Belt is in a completely different situation this year. Woudnt be fair to compare.
