So you're saying there's a chance?
76 bowl spots
70 eligible teams, 72 if you count GS and App
NW plays Illinios so that gets you to 71 next week.
So we need seven of the following ten to happen.
We need Temple to lose to Tulane
ODU to lose to FAU
UAB to lose to S. miss.
Navy to lose to USA
Ohio to lose to Miami (Oh)
Akron to lose to. Kent St.
Fresno to lose to Nevada tonight
Cal to lose to BYU
UTk to lose to Vandy
Kentucky loss to Louisville
Seven of the ten will be favored to get to six wins.
While it is doubtful it is fun to any have the chance to discuss.

Wildcard scenario that reduces your 7 to 6 - UNC does the right thing and self imposes a bowl ban due to the recent developments on the hill...
Not holding my breath of that happening though with that bunch.

Va Tech and UVA play each other next week, both are 5-6.Saint3333 wrote:76 bowl spots

Re: So you're saying there's a chance?
I posted this on the Sun Belt board, but unfortunately, our chances are worse than this. Here's why:
1. UVa plays VT next week (as mentioned by hapapp above). The winner will go bowling.
2. Both Temple and Navy have 2 games left, and only need to win 1.
3. Even if Washington loses to Oregon State tonight and to Wash St next week, they are ahead of us in the pecking order since they take 6-7 teams before looking at 6-6 or better transitional teams.
4. I also think you may be 1 eligible team short. If you used ESPN's standings page, they do not list MTSU as eligible, but they came back and beat FAU today to get to 6-5. ESPN also shows UVa as eliminated when they are in fact 5-6.
I have been following this closely all season even when it looked like there was no way in the world we would even make 6 wins.
What it boils down to is this. There are 73 teams "eligible" so far, including APP, GSU, and Washington (again I include Washington as eligible because they are ahead of us in the pecking order even if they lose out). That means that there are 3 spots left. 2 of these will be taken by the winners of Northwestern vs. Illinois and UVa vs. VT. This means there is essentially ONE spot left for our purposes. If even 2 of the remaining 14 teams that have a shot make it to 6 wins, we are out of luck for this year.
EDIT: ESPN fixed their page. Now shows MTSU as eligible and UVa as NOT eliminated.

Re: So you're saying there's a chance?
Way too many bowls... saturated... exciting to think I know... but man alive, just too many.. teams with just 6 or 7 wins (8 should be marginal) in a bowl... let that sink in.... These games should really mean something (like winning a national championship). Instead the shear number of bowls and teams in them, just seems like "social promotion"... all over again... Mind you, yes, these are largely business driven bowls... Maybe I'm just old enough to now be "Old School" on this... just has driven me nuts with all the darn bowl games these days... etc..

Don't we also have to beat Idaho on Saturday? Seems like I read somewhere that the Campbell victory doesn't count because it was against a non-scholarship team.

That coupled with the Liberty loss isn't going to help either. Next year my friend, next year we go bowling.AppGrad78 wrote:Don't we also have to beat Idaho on Saturday? Seems like I read somewhere that the Campbell victory doesn't count because it was against a non-scholarship team.

Re: So you're saying there's a chance?
This is correct. I think that's why no one really started talking about our chances until yesterday since we had a much lower likelihood of reaching 7 wins before yesterday (and obviously even less likely in previous weeks.)AppGrad78 wrote:Don't we also have to beat Idaho on Saturday? Compare that to Georgia Southern. Since they only needed 6 wins and they started off much better than we did, their board has been talking about their chances all season.

Re: So you're saying there's a chance?
Since we could only make a bowl if there weren't enough teams anyway, the quality of our wins and losses had nothing to do with it. Rather, us getting to 7-5 (because as mentioned above, Campbell wouldn't count) was all that mattered.WataugaMan wrote:That coupled with the Liberty loss isn't going to help either. The requirement that there not be enough bowl eligible teams was the hard part. Looks like it is not to be this year. So yes, next year my friend!

Speaking of Liberty I heard they are going to the FCS playoffs, representing the Big South.

I agree with you but that ship sailed long ago. Personally I would be embarrassed to be playing in a bowl game with 6 wins.WXAPP wrote:Way too many bowls... saturated... exciting to think I know... but man alive, just too many.. teams with just 6 or 7 wins (8 should be marginal) in a bowl... let that sink in.... Personally I'll be in attendance for our bowl games no matter the location or the opponent, or our win total.
We no longer our spend our opponents two to one and getting to a winning season or.500 is much tougher, nothing to be embarrassed about.

It was to my understanding that since it is our first year in the FBS, there was a one year "penalty" on post-season play, same reason we couldn't go to the play-offs last year. So I don't think we can actually participate in a bowl this year.

Re: So you're saying there's a chance?
Technically you are right. It is not a penalty but part of the transitional period. However, we are eligible for a bowl game this year if we qualify with wins, which we should next week, and seek and feta waiver which would be unlikely.App&HeelsMan wrote:It was to my understanding that since it is our first year in the FBS, there was a one year "penalty" on post-season play, same reason we couldn't go to the play-offs last year. Re: So you're saying there's a chance?
There is no waiver. The ONLY way we could make a bowl is if there were not enough eligible teams. They then look to teams in this order to fill the remaining slots:AppSt94 wrote:Technically you are right. It is not a penalty but part of the transitional period. 1. Teams finishing 6-6 with one win against a team from the lower Football Championship Subdivision which does not offer at least 56.7 scholarships
2. 6-6 teams with two wins over FCS schools.
3. Teams that finish 6-7 with loss number seven in their conference championship game (that has been eliminated by the conference championship waiver rule).
4. 6-7 teams that normally play a 13-team schedule, such as Hawaii's home opponents and Hawaii.
5. FCS teams who are in the final year of the two-year FBS transition process, if they have at least a 6-6 record.
6. Finally, 5-7 teams that have a top-5 Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. This was later adjusted to allow other 5-7 teams to be selected thereafter—in order of their APR.
In our case, it is likely that we would need 7 wins instead of 6, because Campbell does not offer scholarships. However, this is all a moot point because there is currently about a ONE TENTH OF A PERCENT chance that there will not be enough teams.

Might want to cut your hair if you want to be an ASU fan.
Might want to drive a truck and not a sports car if you want to be an ASU fan.
Might want to denounce every school in the country and announce ASU is the only school that can supply an appropriate education.

It's college. Everyone likes to tout theirs as the "best". I have no problems with it.
