Is anyone concerned that we might lose coaches?

Unread post by app97 » Sat Nov 29, 2014 10:09 pm

I guess it's always a possibility. But, after the turn around this season, there might be some programs trying to lure some coaches away. I know there are lots of factors, but you've got to attribute much of this season's success to coaching.

Ledford would be the most likely to get offered. If I'm Scott I call a meeting and talk about what this team can do over the next two years. We could see success that enables our assistants to skip a move to get to that even bigger job.

it's always a possibility. happened to us during the championship years. it's really a huge compliment to your program though

i think we had at least 1 coach turn another program down last year.

now that we are in the FBS, we will start to lose assistants on a regular basis, happens to every one, including the Bamas, and the Florida States of the world, the one Im worried about is Nate Woody, hope we can keep him for a couple more years, I think its only a matter of time before he leaves, he is just too good not to get noticed by the bigger schools.

yea.... this is a different world. Hopefully Rick B. and the Chancellor are having conversations about the staff. One could certainly make the case that SS and Woody and crew in their first full year have done significantly more than at least half of the schools in SB. Also one can see Woody in an interview showing a HC his 2013 def. stats and 2014 stats. There are plenty of P5 schools that would pay him 3-4x what he is making now. We will be lucky to keep him one more season. Remember after the 2013 season he interviewed for the Army DC job. We need to show the staff some love.

I was thinking about that too. I will be surprised if some of our assistants don't get offers. Maybe we can plant some "longer" term thinking because, without momentum they are likely to get even better offers after next season. That being said, if a good P5 offer comes along, it would be almost impossible for most of those guys to turn it down. I certainly hope we have a list already prepared for each and every position of prospects we would want to contact in the event something happened. The coach probably doesn't have it updated right now since he's had other things on his mind, but I bet he starts working on it soon.

Ledford, Woody, Sirignano, and Foster all stand out as targets with great statistics that will draw attention. I'm hoping we make it one more year before the raiding starts. Maybe the first half of the season will camouflage things enough to protect us (looking for a silver lining to the horrible start).

As much as I'd hate to lose any coach, Ledford and Woody are the two I want to stay put!
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

I'm hoping with Ledford being from Marion and having a young child that he will be with us for a few more years.

Depends on who offers him, and for how much. As stated, even FSU lost their DC to Georgia after last year... Hard to turn a big raise down.

That said - thinking we're flying under the radar enough this year to keep most of them. If we carry this over to next year, that likely changes!

A great college coach's biggest asset is his ability to identify and hire assistants. Coach Moore was great at it for many years, and it appears Scott may have learned a thing or two from him.

Always a concern, then and now but there is a LOT of competition. We aren't the only program with coaches hoping for a bigger payday. It will always and forever be part of the landscape.

If you're team is winning, your coaches will be in line for promotions. That could mean an offensive line coach going to a bigger school (Elliott to South Carolina) or an assistant getting a head coaching gig (Speir to Western).

For some reason, Charlie Cobb cited this as a reason to replace the head coach. I hope the new AD doesn't go that route.

I'd like to see a quote that verifies your 2nd to last sentence. It's pretty ridiculous otherwise.

The problem with Moore, at the end, was that he didn't replace his outgoing assistants with a serviceable hire. McLain, Glenn, and our revolving door of Grad Assistant WR coaches weren't comparable to Elliott, Satt, and Galloway...nor was Dale Jones a comparable replacement for Wiley.

That's ridiculous, Moore wasn't not extended for that reason. Don't start that crap up here.

“the potential for 6-7 new coaches due to attrition, a new strength coach for the off-season”

It wasn't "attrition." It was our assistant getting a head coaching job and promoting several of our assistants.

We should expect to lose a couple of assistants every year. We'll lose more if one of the assistants gets a head coaching gig.

Not sure, in the context of that letter, he meant getting promoted. To me that means that there were likely to be more McClains and Little Mo's than good assts. moving on. Just my take.

Or you could just have read Coach Stepp's Twitter feed today of former players and coaches congratulating him on the move. :)

This was sent after McClain left/was let go, Chris Moore left/was let go, and we were fortunate enough to dump Glenn off on Speir. Satterfield then basically filled most of the positions that were vacated.

Charlie Cobb wasn't using it as a reason to "fire a coach" he was citing it as something he wasn't sure Coach Moore was capable of doing any more at that stage in his career. It was specific to Jerry Moore - and considering the last round of hires he had made, it was easy to see why he felt that way.
