Talk about how the name of Armanti Edwards still rings as sacred in the halls at App State...

I listened to the post-game press conference with Satt, Malachi, Law, Cox and Lamb.

There's a really cool moment (around the 15:40 mark on the video on appstatesports.com) when a writer asked Taylor how it felt to break an Armanti Edwards record. I believe Steve Behr asked the question.

Anyway, the way Behr framed the question was "Taylor there are not a lot of people that get to break an Armanti Edwards record but you did that today with the freshman yardage record... how does it feel?"

When Steve said "Armanti Edwards record" Marcus Cox' face looked shocked and he turned to John Law and the mic caught him saying "Wooow! That's great!" and proceeds to turn to Taylor with a goofy grin on his face.

Taylor humbly responded by saying he got emotional when Mike Flynn told him that because he grew up watching Armanti and witnessed his greatness firsthand.

As Taylor was wrapping up that statement, Marcus, almost impatiently, tapped on Taylor's leg and stated "...I'm proud of you, man."

I am unabashedly an Armanti apologist. He was and is in a class of his own. I paid way too much (my wife says it was too much, anyway) for a game worn #14 jersey a few years ago.

Maybe I'm making too much of it but I love seeing history acknowledged and appreciated. Marcus is well on his way to becoming an App State legend and seeing him excited for another teammate for being in the same conversation as The Great One was just really cool to watch.

We have some players who are gonna re-write the record books here at App!

Yeah, I posted this in the John Law DPOY thread. Awesome moment...Marcus is an awesome addition to the Appalachian family.

I noticed Cox reaction as well. Pretty cool to see the respect and knowledge the young guys have for one of our greats. I'm sure Cox is well aware of the guy who made #14 famous.

Armanti had 3,404 yards in 2006 in 15 games which comes out to 227 per game.

Taylor had 2908 in 12 games which is 242 yards per game.

That is total just as you asked for.

Lamb had more passing than Armanti but less running.

I heard this too and thought it was awesome. This is a real team! However, let's not forget Armanti was a "true" freshman. Taylor benefited from a red shirt year....This is not to take anything away from Taylor, he did it in less games and has an amazing ceiling as a pocket passer. I'm very excited about our future with him as QB but I don't like the comparison. They are two very different players for two different times.

We all hope Cox can continue with these great numbers - meaning rushing yards and total offensive yards - but my thought is about one number - the number 14 - if Cox doesn't change and he does what we all hope then are we going to retire two number 14s ??? - I know, this is getting way ahead of the game but I just figured Armanti's #14 would have already been retired ---

Armanti was just a different cat. He was IMO not an FCS talent. He was just too small, by some standards, to play QB in FBS. I have not doubt that he could have put up comparable numbers at countless FBS schools. Maybe not at the upper echilon but certainly in the MAC, CUSA, etc. He did benefit from many extra playoff games and some of his numbers in regular season games were like in a video game. We are really fortunate to have a QB and RB with two more years together who both have opportunities to break what many thought were unbreakable ASU records. This program has so far to go to even approach a ceiling. I for one can't wait until next season.

You've got to love Marcus' reaction.......especially since he wears #14. He realizes what a big deal breaking an AE record is. Congrats to Lamb, Cox and the entire team on a season to remember!

This was kind of a surprise to me. As I watched Lamb play he looked like more of a game "manager" than a big impact player. Great job.

Breaking any of #28s records is pretty dang special as well.

No one thought #28 could surpass #23.

I think one thing that Lamb and Armanti have in common is their poise under pressure. Neither one seemed to get rattled when plays broke down. They just did whatever was necessary to turn it into positive yards.

Not to rehash an old topic-- and yes I agree with you that if anybody deserved to have a number retired, it's Armanti--- However, what is happening with Cox could cause a shift in "policy" in only retiring the jersey in the future if he keeps it up.
