Duke started the removal of their track today. I hope our administration is paying attention to this and how Duke goes about it.

Are they spending $100M to create a 50K seat stadium and average 30K per game?

The $100 million figure is interesting. At that Wake/Duke game they were talking about the renovations constantly on the PA system. They never mentioned $100 million, it was either $20 or 50 million. I wonder if the $100 mill includes other athletic facilities outside of football.

It was also odd to think they were going to increase seating, when the stands were only 1/3 full.

I wonder if they have the same problems we would encounter with lowering the field?

did some quick math. Avg attendance for 6 home games for Dook this season was about 26K. They are experiencing their best run in years for football. Had 33K for the UNC game. Why on earth would they expand seating (if indeed seat expansion is part of the plan)?

This video from Duke's website should answer most of your questions. Duke is going to dramatically UPGRADE and RENOVATE their football stadium (no plans for expansion at this time to my knowledge).

Duke is in the ACC. Even without demand they're under pressure to bring their facilities up to par.

Due to removing the track and lowering the field, they are filling that empty space with about 10 rows of seats around the entire stadium.

From the looks of one diagram it will partly be handicap seating. It's about time they did something to plaza area and restrooms!

I think that we could build a three step down tiered platform out into the track 15 feet and allow this area to be standing room only student sections on both East and West sides. Each step down could be about 5 feet wide. A new wall could then be built in front . The students would be closer to the field and still about 3 feet higher than the field. This would allow a large amount of standing room only space for a small amount of $$$.

They are also building a new track less than 500 yards from the current track in the main athletic area of campus. Part of a $3.5 Billion cap campaign with $250 Mil in athletics improvements. We can't even get $250 Mil campus wide. Lets not start planning yet.

If you've been on the Duke campus recently and walked around much, you'd know that many of their athletic facilities are a walk back in time to say, ugh, 1965. They have acres and acres of plain-jane fenced in fields, but the actual facilities are dated and in a state of decay. W.Wade Stadium, in particular, is largely structurally unchanged since Watauga's Bob Matheson played there decades ago. There are places in the stands where you can count the coats of paint they've used to try to cover up cracks in concrete and asphalt over the years. There are open cracks in concrete you can stick your hand in. Ugly! They've utilized colorful awnings, paint and vinyl and managed to make it look better than it is from a distance; but up close and personal the cosmetic treatment literally just dressed up an eye-sore. Very, very ugly.

Now, if you're a tennis fan, their tennis venue is really nice.

I think that would be lousy sight lines, even with the students standing. I was 9 rows from the field Saturday at acc champ game and it was difficult to see anything from hash marks to sideline on our side.

I know that our alumni base hardly gives back to the school, that we have to have to pay for 44 extra scholarships, we still haven't paid off the athletic center (KBS) and we have to pay our coaches more now that we're in a more competitive conference...

BUT DUKE IS REMOVING THE TRACK!

Drop everything you're doing and remove the track! Because it's important!

That figure includes the $$$ to repair the damage to the Visitors Locker Room from the UNC game!

Again this is not just a Wallace Wade Stadium upgrade and renovation. They are upgrading multiple athletic facilites throughout campus. This includes new ticket office and Athletic Department staff offices, a new weight room facility for olympic sports, and a new track and field facility. They are also adding onto Cameron Indoor Stadium (not adding seats) and building a new concourse area between all of these facilities.

This video (from 2013) pre-dates the one I previously posted, and actually shows the stadium enlcosed as a bowl which could happen in the future, but isn't in the plans presently.



As for the Tar Holes vandalism, that is coming out of UNC's pocket. I am sure there are seveal jokes to be made there, but I am too tired. I guess we shouldnt be surprised by anything coming out of Chapel Hill these days (or the past 18 years).
