Was this the best App team ever?
Was this the best App team ever?
I'm not talking about wins and losses. Forget divisions. Was this the most talented App team ever? By the end of the season, how do you think they compare against some of the greats? 1975, 1995, 2005, 2006, 2007, etc...

My opinion, this was the best team since I started at App in 1985. Best team, 2nd half of the season, not the first.

Re: Was this the best App team ever?
I think 2007 was a perfect storm. We had P5 quality coaches that had established a culture of winning and discipline and a roster full of players that played the App State way. They all knew each other's strengths and weaknesses and, of course, Armanti Edwards.AppAttack wrote:I'm not talking about wins and losses. Forget divisions. Was this the most talented App team ever? I believe 2007 could've beaten 2014... but I think 2014 just learned a lesson that can only be EARNED:
"How to win football games."
My guess is that next year's team has a very good shot of being the most talented roster in App State history as well as the best team.

Re: Was this the best App team ever?
I was thinking the same thing when I saw this thread. Just wait until next years team. And the 2016 team will be even stronger with this season's redshirts having a season under their belts. Lots to look forward to with the foundation of this team.APPARJ wrote:I think 2007 was a perfect storm. Re: Was this the best App team ever?
I've always thought the '06 team may have been the "best" team of the three Championship teams. While '07 was probably more talented overall, I thought the execution, especially onthe defensive side of the ball, was better in '06.

Still give the edge to the 06 and 07 team but next years team could be the best ever

Re: Was this the best App team ever?
I'm not getting into this debate but one thing I would like to have seen: 1975 wishbone offense vs. 2005 defense. Both sides had some strengths that I'd love to have seen go head to head.AppAttack wrote:I'm not talking about wins and losses. Forget divisions. Was this the most talented App team ever? We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: Was this the best App team ever?
I moved recently, and while I was waiting for the cable company to hook me back up to the world, I watched the DVDs from the 2005-07 seasons. I've come to the conclusion that 2006 was the best all-around team from that era, and it's not even close.
Its funny, because it's kind of the forgotten championship. The second half against UMASS was a thing of beauty. We reached into their chests, took out their hearts, and let them watch it beat for a little while before delivering the kill shot. And there was nothing they could do about it. The teams we didn't bury out of the gate, suffered the same fate. We were a machine, with the only real flaw being the freshman quarterback.
I feel this 2014 team (at the end of the season) probably beats 2005, loses in a close one to 2007, but can't quite get over the hump against 2006.

When this conversation starts I always think about the 85 team. That defense was the best I've ever seen. We pitched three shutouts and two other teams only managed a field goal against us. That was Dino Hacketts 200 tackle season also which to me is still an unbelievable feat.

85 was my first year on campus. I wish now that I could remember more about how good that defense was.appfanz wrote:When this conversation starts I always think about the 85 team. I actually watched more than half your games this year and I watched probably about the same amount Armanti's senior year. In some ways this team was definitely better, but it is hard for me to ever pick against great QB play, so I'd probably go with that team over this year's simply because of Armanti.

Thanks for the kind words but AE's career ended at the 1 yard line in the semis at Montana in 09. The "great years" were his freshmen and Sophmore years. Sorry, I'm not exactly an App fan, so I mixed the years up some, but I think you guys still get the point.proasu89 wrote:Thanks for the kind words but AE's career ended at the 1 yard line in the semis at Montana in 09. The way this team was playing at the end of the season, I'd have to give them the edge over the '06 - '07 teams.

I'll always pull for BQ and any App guy in the NFL, but there will always be a stigma for me with BQ because he ended AE's career with a pass that hit him right in the hands in the endzone.
I refuse to watch any replay of that game.

Re: Was this the best App team ever?
2006 might have been the best. Close loss to NCSU- should have beaten them and I think we had shots but could not cash in. 14 straight wins which is crazy in of itself. Wins of 41-0, 41-6, 45-21, 56-21, 40-7, 42-13. Playoff wins of 45-28, 38-17, 49-24 and championship win of 28-17. I am convinced that team could have won any number of bowl games. Appreciated what Trey Elder brought to the program but had we known what we had in AE things might have been different in that game. If we had run the table with a 15-0 record this thread would have no debate.
