Georgia Southern-App State on Rivalry Weekend?

Unread post by SouthernPigskin » Wed Mar 04, 2015 11:34 am

I know that Georgia Southern and Appalachian State have traditionally faced each other in October, but would you prefer to see the game take place on "Rivalry Weekend"?

I think the simpler explanation is that not every game on Rivalry Weekend is a rivalry game.

If App and GaSo can't play on rivalry weekend then I wish we could work out something with Charlotte and play them on rivalry weekend.

Wouldn't work because those pansies don't want to play in Boone that late in the season. The cold scares them.

Woah. Why would we want to lower ourselves to their level by validating them with "rivalry" status? That program has gotten it's **** kicked in for two years while they were still sitting at the kid's table and they can't even get 10,000 people to their games.

Proximity and bad blood from message board fans does not a rivalry make.

Another thing to consider is that the SBC will likely have a championship game starting in 2016. Depending on how the league determines the participants in that game, App and GaSo could be facing each other there with some regularity. So in that case you wouldn't want them playing at the end of the regular season, because that first game would basically lose its meaning if there were a rematch a week later.

Competitively, they would make a good replacement for Western.

Plus the only way I would want to play them every year is if we were in the same conference and had no choice.

I agree, but if we end up in the same division within the SBC, that could be a great way to end the season and reach the title game. I'm intrigued either way, but I would be happy with figuring out a way to make GS our every-other-year Black Saturday opponent again.

I know Charlotte isn't competitive yet but due to their location and the surrounding competition I don't think it'll be long before they are. Plus having an in-state rival would bring a lot of traveling fans and more money to Boone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I simply don't get the uncc fascination* of some ASU fans/alums. If we must have a series with them, fine, I've swallowed that bitter pill. However, now folks are talking about making them the year end rivalry game???? Just....don't.....get, especially given that they have looked down their noses at us this whole time. I just hope our new AD has bigger aspirations than that.

*Yes I understand the recruiting benefit of playing in Charlotte. That's the main reason I've been able to stomach the upcoming series, even though there are other ways to accomplish that.

Small-time nobodies in Harrisburg aside...

I don't mind the App/GaSo rivalry not falling on rivalry weekend. There's no way we get an ounce of press (not that we get much nationally anyway) if our game is 30th in line behind P5 matchups.

Having an in-state rivalry would bring more attention to the area and the schools. Not only that but having a rivalry game so close in proximity to each other sets up very good traveling fanbases which means more money in Boone.

Plus we'd be able to knock the snot out of them and their arrogant fanbase would have hard evidence (in the shape of a boot on their a**es) that we are better. It's the same type of setup that GaSo and GaSt have. GaSt doesn't stand much of a chance but it looks like it could become a heated rivalry in the future.

I am all for playing UNCC every year, for a variety of reasons. But definitely not on the last week of the season.

Let's not pretend like our fans welcomed the 49ers with open arms when they announced their intentions to start up football. Thumbing our nose at the idea of playing another program that is close in proximity sounds like we should all be studying AFAM classes at THE HILL.

Let us not have the attitude that we are better than any other program (even if it is the case). Line them up and let the play do all the talking. Many of our fans will be on suicide watch if UNCC happens to beat us in the first game of that series.

It has the potential to end up on "Rivaly Week" but not at this point.

agree that 49er's actually need to grow to respectability before we start giving them respect and consider them any kind of rivalry. I hope that eventually we will join them in a regional conference, but that probably will not happen anytime soon. Right now, they have a lot more problems than forming a rivalry with us, low attendance and general lack of indifference by the alumi and students has really been a disappointment the first 2 years, and next year, they are basically, fielding a division 2 or very low FCS program against strong FBS programs almost every week. Going to be tough for their fans to get behind their team next year when your getting beat by 35 almost every week.

regardless of what we think, right now I don't think App/GaSo is considered enough of a TV draw by the networks to be a rivalry weekend game.

At best we could get on ESPNU, but even then, there are probably power 5 games that would get shown over us

Why is uncc always the default. Simple and better solution for "rivalry" weekend. Wake Forest.

That question sums up a big part of how I feel about it. I understand the proximity and recruiting benefits of an off and on series with uncc and have accepted the fact that we will more than likely see more of it as the years go by. However, why is it that they are the "go to" when the scheduling topic comes up and why do so many ASU folks clamor for a heated rivalry with them? When I think of establishing a rivalry in FBS, I think of re-establishing either of the rivalries we used to have with ECU or Wake. I know neither will happen over night, but can't we at least try? It's not like uncc is knocking our door down trying to make us their rival! One thing I give their fans credit for is that at least they are setting their aim higher. Not sure why so many of our fans can't/won't do the same.
