Next upgrade HCC scoreboard :D
Interesting we will forego FCOA this year. We must figure it can't impact recruits we've already signed but we must the next year to keep up.

Is anyone else is the SB offeeri g FCOA this year? I know some have said they will in the future, but not sure about 2015-2016.
Interesting to see season ticket sales at only 82% of last year. Im sure the 2 Thursday night games are the biggest reaso for this as the fan base seems very excited for the season overall.

I thought that was interesting as well. I was wondering what the historical data would support. I think your right though. The two Thursday night games and the Saturday after Thanksgiving probably plays into some people not being able to commit so early. As a new season ticket holder, I wonder what the percentage of new purchases are.

I think your right, the two Thursday night games is contributing to season ticket sales being down, but I think the big reason is collage game attendance is going down across the country, including the P5 schools. Glad to hear he say the athletic dept is on solid ground.

Here's what I wrote about COA in early June.
Arkansas State is paying $4,000 of their $4,500 for every scholarship. Louisiana-Lafayette is paying their full cost of attendance number of $5,888 for every scholarship. UALR is paying full cost of attendance for men’s and women’s basketball only of around $4,500 per scholarship. Then you have Texas State, who is “unlikely to participate,” and New Mexico State said they won’t participate until next year.
I remember an article saying Georgia Southern will participate, but nothing else is known.

It would be interesting to know where we were at this point last year. If we were at 82% of what we eventually sold then we are right on pace. I'm guessing we are behind pace but hard to tell without more info. Heck we may have sold twice as many as we did by end of June last year. As Doug said in the article...it's just information and that is all.

would like to know what he meant by "spruce up" KBS, my definition of that term doesn't imply adding 8-10 thousand seats, removing the track, and redoing the visitor's locker room, all things that are a must in the next 2-4 years if we hope to keep up.

The vagueness of his statements leave a lot up for interpretation. I don't think that updates to visitor locker rooms would be enticing to recruits. Just slap a coat of pink paint on them and call it a day.

That's rather ambitious and a bit crazy. I like it.
No pink paint for the visitors locker room. It's been done before. Let's go with polka dots or murals of evil clowns or something like that.

But also I'm not sure last year's sales are the standard for success to begin with. I believe season ticket sales were down last year from previous years, and certainly attendance was.

I believe the reason is simple. We can see almost all of our games on Television (ESPN 3 and ESPNU) now. However, for the first time ever, I bought the touchdown package for this year. I am excited about what is in store for us and will attend three home games and two away games this year... Be Yosef and support our Mountaineers.

Man do I like what I heard from Gillin. He is definitely talking all the rights points.
1. He basically said we WILL be doing FCOA next year (in some form) which demonstrates we plan to compete with our peers
2. “An SEC coach once told me that if he doesn’t see a crane on campus, it means he’s falling behind,” Gillin said. Gillin seems to be showing his hand relative to his intentions. Clearly you don't need a crane to repaint or spruce up the restrooms. This shows that he looks at schools like the SEC as points of reference when considering facitilies updates.

Two Thursday night games and Thanksgiving weekend are the main reason for the seemingly weak sales.
Being on ESPN on Thursday night and having each game on ESPN3 is a double edged sword. Great exposure, diminishing ticket sales.
Every program is having attendance issues so I'm not singling us out but it's the truth.
The Thanksgiving weekend game will be interesting as it will potentially have conference title implications. Hopefully a very similar feel to the FCS playoff games that were usually slated on Thanksgiving weekend.

1. I would have thought the real cost of college thingy would be involving more than just 225 scholarships...across the 20 sports we field.
2. Reminds me of the bidding war between school districts as to who could pay the most in supplements without breaking the bank. I chose Charlotte Mecklenberg once because of it's more than 10% supplement plus with commuting I didn't have to deal with the additional cost in living. I see the same analogy with college sports. It would be hard to turn down $3000 or so if compared to other programs.

About the only way of skirting the Thanksgiving or football game dilemma would be to do what we did a year or two was to rent a house or large cabin and have Thanksgiving dinner there. Problem was a couple of the older relatives didn't want to make the long ride.

This is another issue that Doug Gillin will have to fix. I don't know the exact numbers for each team, but several of our non-revenue sports are not fully funded--meaning that ASU is not awarding them the maximum number of scholarships allowed by the NCAA.
Football, men's and women's basketball, wrestling, field hockey and volleyball are fully funded--awarding the NCAA scholarship maximum. I believe baseball is close--but still short. To the best of my knowledge, the other sports are short. At the time that Fran Borkowski stepped down as chancellor (2003), the athletic department had set a goal to award 75% of the NCAA maximum for men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis and other teams of that ilk by 2005. That 75% goal had not been met when C.Cobb took over the AD's duties in '05. He made some inroads to improve the situation during his tenure, but IIRC, it would take some 305 scholarships to fully fund every sport we send into competition. I know we aren't there yet; but I'm not up-to-date on just how much progress has been made.
