Re: No Game Thread?
We handled business and did what we were supposed to do. This board only posts when we don't perform.
I was impressed with our size and closing speed especially on defense. This will be tested next week.
The backups were solid too. Amazing the difference in depth. We have 6 RBs and about a dozen quality WRs.
One area we do need to address in punt returns, we seemed to struggle judging the ball at times. Matics had a great day, as hard as we (including me) were on him he needs a kudos today.

Re: No Game Thread?
Pretty much nailed it Saint. I was impressed with our DLine and the effects of the strength program. Howard has some big boys up front and we handled them well. I feel good about our depth as well. JP Caruso is quite the physical specimen. He looked good and I feel really good with him in the game. All in all I think we played much better than many teams in their first game. Very few mental errors and very few missed assignment. Next week's test is going to be about how we handle a faster team.. Oh and 7 for 7 on extra points is a plus. Kicking it out of the endzone is a good way to eliminate the big return.

Unfortunately, a large number of the members of this board can only be bothered to post when they have something to gripe about and they can scream for people to be fired. Its the sports radio disease.fjblair wrote:What is with the crickets around here?
Not much to complain about yesterday. the team performed beautifully, the coaches had them prepared, the crowd was very good and they stayed through halftime, and even the weather turned out to be better than expected. A lot of these people don't know what to say.

This board has always been a bit quiet despite the number of members and fans that we have. There was also a game day chat yesterday, for whatever it's worth, but I wasn't participating.

Re: No Game Thread?
I was tooling around the national mall during the game (we took our daughter to DC for her first big road trip over the weekend), so I didn't see much of the game. Got the run down from my dad this morning-he said JP looked good, the defense was fast, and the yellow unis looked like crap on a rag on TV. Sounds like there wasn't much to complain about and we played like we should have played. All in all, probably not a ton to post about.
Give 'em hell!

I was pleasantly surprised at how accurate JP was with his passes given he hasn't seen game action in almost two years. He didn't seem phased at all by the stage. He is a very capable backup. Both QB's played well and managed the situations exceptionally well.BeauFoster wrote:I was tooling around the national mall during the game (we took our daughter to DC for her first big road trip over the weekend), so I didn't see much of the game. I'M a coach, I watch warumps. I was impressed with Caruso in warmups, his accuracy and strength of throw. I also liked the Howard punter, he was gettingoff booming kicks (like the 83 yder). During the game he was eratic during the game without much pressure.

Caruso did look good, and was quick with his decision making.huskie3 wrote:I'M a coach, I watch warumps. I was impressed with Caruso in warmups, his accuracy and strength of throw. For the record, it looked like the Howard punter tweaked his leg at some point after the 83 yarder. He was stretching on the sideline trying to work it out.

Re: No Game Thread?
My wife, son, and I departed Oak Ridge NC at 6am to attend the Hall of Fame Breakfast, hosted by the Former Athletes Association. At 8am Boone was barely moving, but once we got to the Holmes we saw wonderful signs of life. Cheerleaders directed us into the building (these impressive young people were truly excited to see us, even though it had to have been really, really early for them). Once in we were greeted by former athletes and coaches, given our name tags, and asked to find our table. The event was absolutely superb and the catered food was delicious and plentiful (we had over three hundred attendees). Then we honored ASU's inductees into its Athletics Hall of Fame: Jerry Moore, Armanti Edwards, Chip Hooks, Daniel Wilcox and Leigh Cooper Wallace. The four men and the father of Ms Wallace gave heart-felt acceptance speeches, enough to bring tears of joy and pride to everyone's eyes. I am so proud to be a Mountaineer!
It's now about 11:15am and we are walking the road up to Varsity Gym. We see fans everywhere setting up their tailgates. I discovered some sites that I didn't know about, secluded spots on campus that fans had appropriated, diamonds in the rough. Excitement was everywhere. We went by the Bookstore; I always have to buy something, good crowd, had to wait in line to pay for my merchandise. Now the time is 12:30pm and Boone is hopping, a lot of fans, mainly older folks. I voiced my concern about the perceived lack of student activity, my 27 year old son reminded me that it was still too early, oh, yah, now I remember. Mast General Store was real busy. We ate at Fat Cat, good crowd.
The time is 1:45pm and we're walking back to the car at the Library parking deck. The deck is nearly full, and the flags are flying on the upper level. We always walk down to the River Street parking lot to see how the tailgating is going. It looked real good, not the best that I've seen, but solid, nevertheless. Now, we can hear the band warming up - it's great to hear the BOD, our game day experience is nearly complete! We get to the stadium parking lot and it is booming, these fans know how to party!
It's now about 2:15pm, and we enter the eastside of the stadium and climb to our seats in section 213. We are right on the 50 yard line. The west side looks pretty sparse, only the two middle student sections are full, but fans continue to come in. The Mountaineers looked sharp in their yellow uniforms, while warming up. Around 2:30pm the BOD arrives, now my heart really starts pumping. Man, that band kept coming in, wave after wave - it's huge! The band marches to the student section, which is now almost full, less the two outside sections. Fans keep on pouring in. By the time we get to pregame, the hill is starting to fill up, the students are full, and the west side upper deck is filling in quickly. I can't see my eastside, lower deck so I don't know what that was looking like, but I do know that we were going to have a great crowd, a lot more than the 17000 many of the MMBers were predicting. Five minutes before kickoff the stadium erupts with a blasting APP STATE cheer, led by the students, calling out the team - IT'S TIME TO PLAY!! And the rest is history, well over 24000 fans were on hand to honor the team and the Hall of Fame Inductees. App State is off to a tremendous start. See you at Clemson. Go Apps!!!

Re: No Game Thread?
appgrunt71, thank you so much for the details of your game day experience. I live in South Florida and I really miss the school and game day, just too difficult for me to make it up. Thanks again.
