Congrats Satt and Co.

Unread post by Saint3333 » Mon Sep 28, 2015 5:38 pm

Often times we blame coaches for losses, I'd like to take a minute and congratulate Satt and Co. for the progress they've made in under 12 months. There is A LOT of work left this season and they'd be the first to tell you that, but go back and read the threads after the first 5-6 weeks of the 2014 season. Some of those posts have made a lot of us arm-chair QBs look down right stupid, including myself. I didn't think he could turn it around in time to calm the mob as I projected the end of the 2015 season before we'd sniff a .500 record.

Based upon the last half on 2014 and first quarter of 2015 we have improved in every facet of our program. We are bigger, faster, stronger, smarter (could lessen the penalties), and more confident. I love the swagger the team has, not over the top, just the right amount of confidence.

Pumped about this weekend and the rest of the season. Bring a friend up the mountain this weekend it's time to start believing in being a champion again.

If anyone needs a refresher course on what we sounded like last year, go over to the ODU message board and read their meltdown over this weekend. It was like stepping back in time.

I saw that and thought the same thing. There is no doubt, when you're winning, the air smells fresher, the wife's casserole tastes better, the kids' singing sounds sweeter….
It's amazing the difference between this homecoming and last. Coach Satt deserves all the credit we can give him. Let's let him hear it early and often on Saturday!

I think their QB - Bentley - is going to be good. They're crucifying him on the ODU boards.

He's got a long way to go. I think he needs to thank Meadors for raising his stock at Byrnes.

The one, often overlooked but crucial, thing Scott & Co. had to do last year was integrate the FBS and (older) FCS recruits--- It wasn't easy to keep a balance and not lose an entire team. I think they did a fantastic job at while getting better players on the field as the season wore on. I've seen every game this season in person and the chemistry is the best--maybe-- I've ever seen. I can't wait until Saturday!!

We have the opportunity to go 2-0 in peer out of conference games this year. That's outstanding. Then we get an easily winnable georgia state, which should let us rest some starters, before opening up tough conference play.

Oh yeah, and with the majority of our starters being underclassmen, we'll basically have this team for 2 more years after this!!!

Rolls: I think Bentley is going to be good, too. He certainly looked the part against N.C. State. But, man, did he stink Saturday. I still can't figure out who he was throwing to on Law's pick.

Satt made a difficult decision when he became head coach. Do you try and win right away or do you take your lumps, redshirt most of your recruits, and try and build depth across the board. They all knew the first couple of years were going to be rough, especially with installing a difficult new D at the same time. And they were. But we are seeing the benefits of the decisions and the change in S & C. We are 3 deep in many positions and next year we'll have even more as the RS Fr and this years 3's gain more experience. Still have a couple of positions we need more depth at but our starters are some of the best in the country and, if we continue to fill the spots needed, we'll have a 3 deep at nearly every position with little drop off all the way down to the 3's. That's how to build a successful FBS program.

One of the biggest tells on where your program is at comes from recruiting. When you reach a level that you can have an off year at a position (everyone has them, even the P5's) and as long as you land recruits at that position the next year you can get by without it affecting the overall team, then you have built something well. We're very close to being there. Hard decision by the staff to take this route but we should see it paying off for a while to come.

I think Bentley is going to be fine, he has a cannon for an arm, that 30 yd pass he completed down the sideline between the safety and the corner was a thing of beauty, but his offensive line, if they keep playing at their present level is going to get him killed, they averaged 6'5 315lbs, but they were slow, and played soft. I was really surprised with that much size they couldn't run between the tackles more effectively

From what I understand post mortem this was the hardest part and I am not sure as much integration went on as being volun-told to do some things. At any rate, I was one of the naysayers from the Montana game on, the things I wanted to see are happening and I will give due credit to scott and the staff!

Saint,
It's good to hear you are becoming more convinced that we are on the right track. I have noticed that you have been a bit of a Debbie Downer for a while with quotes like these:

About ODU
"We aren't going to stop the run as effectively as NCSU did, and I think both running games get 150+ yards on the ground (I hope I'm wrong about them)"

"Also their special teams may be better than our."

"I'd give us the edge on defense, them on special teams, and depending on their WRs a push on offense."

"NCSU made them look bad, but I think next week could be a tight one."

"ODU is big on the line and will provide holes for Lawry and time for their talented yet I experienced QB."

I have also notice numerous post by you on the Sun Belt message board always conveying a very pessimistic view of our team's abilities this year.

I am pleased to see you join the ranks of the optimistic group. Welcome back.

Yep I admit to having some doubts that first season and a half but it is very hard to not being impressed with what Coach S has done thus far. Must echo the kudos to the S&C program as well.

Every quote provided was an objectionable and reasonable comment regarding last weeks game, I know I didn't have us dominating ODU like we did. Difference between pessimistic and objective.

Thanks Yosef10, that was an objective and reasonable take on my post. :D

I thought we'd win the ODU game, but love the fact that we were as dominate as NCSU was in the trenches vs. ODU.

I'll temper expectation yet again however as I think WYO will be a better offense than ODU and be able to move the ball against us in between the 20's. I do think we'll be able to run for over 250 yards on them. Not ready to take App -25 this weekend.

Call me pessimist, but you'll have to do so in KBS yelling my head off this Saturday, hope we see a big crowd there.

Character grows through adversity, and we had plenty of that the beginning of last year. Satterfield took that gamble to build his stable and it worked out. I was feeling down last year about this time but I wasn't one of the people calling for his job, now Im sure those people are feeling bad or just have short term memory. At any rate, even if we don't win the conference this year, I like the growth that I am seeing on the field.

Saint, good post and I too am glad to see your confidence in the program coming back. I really believe we are moving towards being the top program in the Sun Belt along with GS. That doesn't mean we will run over everyone, but I think our programs have the winning tradition in place to always be a contender.

The first year and a half were tough, but I'm very glad that Satt and company did the right thing by building our foundation instead of going for the quick fix. I was very supportive of the staff through most of the ups and downs, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried after Liberty last year. That loss could have been crippling for our program, but the players and coaches used it to fuel our resurgence.

Wyoming will likely be a tougher test offensively than ODU, but I don't think their D will be able to stop us very much. Let's get this W!
