Daniel Wilcox on ASN Radio Broadcasts: One Request

Full disclosure: I've yet to listen to an Appalachian-IMG radio broadcast this season in it's entirety, so it's possible that I've just caught the same thing at the exact moment it has been said each broadcast. Nonetheless, I've caught enough of the broadcasts while coming/going from the games or while listening to highlights/replay that I have one request for Daniel Wilcox as he moves forward as the ASN color commentator. Please, PLEASE, do your hardest to refrain from uttering the word 'freaking' on-air. Again, he may have only said it once each broadcast and it just so happened to be during a segment I have heard but I cringe each time I hear it. Don't get me wrong...I'm not opposed to the word. I probably say it a few times a week, on average, myself but when I hear it on a professional FBS-level college radio broadcast that is as well-rounded as ours it simply rubs me as very amateurish. I realize that things happen in the heat of the moment, the passion of a play, but it's just a "ugly" word on-air. I also normally have no real disdain for homerism on team radio broadcasts, as those moments when DJ & crew go off-the-cuff often lead to the best bites, but Daniel's use of the word 'freaking' has to go. I'm sure he's already been informed, and I'm certainly willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as he is new to this and learning as he goes, but hopefully moving forward into the mid-point of the campaign and beyond this will be eliminated. Just a little something I'm sure many would APPreciate.

Caught some of the broadcast on the local radio station Saturday as I was running an errand. Is Daniel doing his best Charles Barkley immitation. Some of the stuff he spouted was ridiculous and added nothing to the broadcast. Enough of the "have you ever see...or have you ever heard of ..."

Yeah, the comment about driving a 57 chevy with box engine or something was a little weird. He's still new, he will grow and get better, hopefully.

Our broadcast team sounds better than half of the NFL radio broadcasts that I've heard.
He's new and he's stepping in for a guy that spent a decade developing chemistry with David Jackson.
Even the best broadcasters have crutches. "Freaking" must be a crutch for Wilcox. The one thing I've noticed is that he has a tendency to say a player's number instead of his name. That should get better with time.

I would expect that DJ is helping to "develop" Mr. Wilcox. He's got some rough edges that need smoothing. But, some moments of promise.

It could be worse, we could be forced to listen to him develop over the PA system.

At least he and DJ know the names of our players...unlike many of the ESPN3 and others I've heard and watched. They even have cheat sheets and still miss several players every game. DW gets excited sometimes and he's new. He'll get better as it goes along.

Meadors had two tackles Saturday according to the stadium PA dude. [emoji32]

That was his 1st game and to be fair we have a lot of duplicate #'s. Doug Rice is a professional and I am sure it'll be corrected in time for the Stink to visit.

I remember when DJ was new, he got confused a lot with his directional commentary and misspoke a lot. Look at him now, one of the best in the country. Also when Avery left and that Steve Brown guy came in talking about throwing a Russian Sickle on the ball carriers (loved it). He wasn't Avery but we got used to him and he got better. It is very different(new) hearing Wilcox on the broadcast but give him some time, he will get better and we will get used to him too.

In case Wilcox, former NFL starter that loves his alma mater, stumbles onto this unfortunate thread:
Thank you for giving your all to App State! You bring new flavor to the broadcast booth and I think you and DJ have great chemistry that will get even better!

Doesn't freakin bother me. The guy is new to the role and I am glad to have an ex-NFL stud alum calling our game.

I don't have a problem with him because I know he is new, and I understand how difficult that position can be being a former Broadcasting major from APP myself. His color comments remind me a little of Eugene from the Carolina Panthers broadcast ha ha.

Eugene was my other comparison. He will be ok when he settles in. Just thought that some of the things he said were strange and left DJ not knowing how to respond.

"Freaking?" No worse than "Geez," or "Gosh Darn," "Shut the Front Door," or any of the other substitutes we use in place of curse words...
Get a freaking life.

First, thanks for the classy response. Much appreciated.
Second, a few of you were critical of my initial comments, thinking they were "unfortunate" or unimportant. In the grand scheme of things this is true. I was simply offering a small piece of constructive advice to Daniel. I'm sure I haven't been the first to mention this as I'm almost certain he has received input from professionals in administrative positions to do his best to refrain from that word on air (as that word is among a select group of words, for numerous reasons, all broadcasters are taught to avoid). Also, based on the couple of likes, subsequent posts, and a few message I've received I know that I wasn't the only one thinking it.
I'm all for Daniel. I'm certainly willing, as I mentioned, to give him time and the benefit of the doubt, and I know DJ & Co. made the best decision for our broadcast team and I'm sure they see the potential. That having been said, this is a message board and we can bring up anything we'd like for discussion. We're the "hardest" of the hardcore here and most of what we discuss is so pea-sized in the grand scheme of things it doesn't even compute. But that is why we visit, be it as an escape, out of boredom, etc. If something like this isn't a big deal for you then fine, move along. If it is something you've (and this is in regards to most topics, not specifically this one) noticed and you'd like to add your two cents feel free. They don't even have to be constructive. Better if they are but either way.

He has producers and program directors to offer him tips. I work in radio, nothing more off putting than a fan who doesn't know what they're talking about telling you how to do your job.
When newbies ask me to critique their work I have a policy...NEVER critique their first show. Always give them time, 3-5-10 shows before offering any advice. Talking on the radio is not like talking to your friends face to face.
