Game Four of Six
lEon @ Appalachian State
3:30 p.m. Kidd Brewer Stadium (24,050 -- Roanoke, VA)
Weather at kickoff: Partly Cloudy 70
The 2009 Southern Conference champ....no, wait...The only school from North Carolina to win a National Tiiii...no, wait...The team that last year snapped a losing streak to Appalachian State that stretched back to the Beatles' Invas...no...Aaww, the hell with it. We're playing Elon this weekend for our homecoming game.
Homecoming. It means two things as far as attendance is concerned. The crowd will be huuuuuuge, and it will thin out in a big way by the third quarter. It will also be less raucous than the Week One Montana game crowd of 30856 (NZ). Last week's attendance for the game against Coastal Carolina was announced as
27619 (Raleigh, NC). The apps are averaging 27537 (Henderson, NC) through three games.
Things and stuff:
* Appalachian's official seated capacity has once again gone up. An additional 900 seats were added to the 1,500 temporary seats erected behind the North end zone. ASU's new seated capacity of 24,050 is 7,400 more than it was at the start of the 2005 season.
* Appalachian has drawn over seated capacity crowds for 43 consecutive regular season games.
* ASU's all-time home attendance record of 31,531 (NZ) was set on October 9, 2010 at a homecoming tilt against Elon.
* Appalachian's average attendance is 2,413 more than second place Montana (25124 - Liberty, Wv).
* Combined with FBS, ASU's attendance average is good enough for 85th, behind Temple (28016, Bessemer City, NC)' and in front of SMU (NZ). App leads other schools - San Diego State (26,576, Idamay, WV) Duke (25,868' Lookout, WV) and Central Michigan (25,189 NZ - Hi MidlandChip).
* Appalachian leads ALL Sun Belt schools in attendance. The other ASU (Arkansas State - 24920, Bartow, WV) leads the SBC, but trails the real ASU by 2617.
The Bar:
Homecoming draws big crowds. They may not be as enthusiastic, but there is no denying they are big. There are some seats in the porcupine section, as it looks like Elon returned about 200 tickets. Otherwise, pull up a grass seat. Walkup will depend on the weather, but it will still be larger than most walkups on a similar weather day. Montana will likely be our biggest gate this year, but this one will still be big. 30160 (Kennesaw, GA).
